“I hardly think I’ve tamed him,” I say.
“I would say you have.” Ferenc strolls in, looking as spectacularly handsome as ever in one of his beautiful bespoke suits, dark shirt open at the neck as always. “We need to talk,” he says to Viktor.
“Sure, boss,” he says, putting down his coffee cup as Ferenc comes up to me and plants a kiss on the top of my head.
“We can’t go out for lunch today, kedves,” he says. “Something came up.”
“Okay.” I shrug and take a sip of my coffee.
It tastes terrible, and had Ferenc and Viktor not been in the room, I’d have spat it back into my cup. Instead I swallow, hard.
“I’ll get Kórnel to make us something good,” Ferenc says.
I feel ill at the very thought of food, despite Kórnel being one of the best chefs ever.
“Not today, boss, he’s…busy,” Viktor says.
“Then I’ll send out to the New York Cafe.” Ferenc grits his teeth as he walks off in the direction of his office.
I watch them go. There are always secrets. Always.
And I know where secrets lead.
The instant the pair of them go out of the door, I’m racing for the bathroom, knowing I’m about to lose my breakfast.
Having closed the door, I heave up the contents of my stomach and then sink down onto the marble floor. Clearly I had one kolbaz too many.
Unless…
I pull my phone out of my pocket and stab at my health app. I stare at it for a long time.
I am late.
Very late.
It could be stress. It could be the upheaval caused by this trip. Or it could be what usually makes women late.
On autopilot, I pull on my boots and coat, collect my bag, and walk down the stairs to the front door. Ferenc’s driver is smoking a cigarette which he hastily puts out.
“Can I help?” he asks.
I debate for a second what he might be able to do.
“No, I’m going out for a walk,” I say.
He frowns but also he gives a fearful glance up at the first floor.
No one wants to cross Ferenc and no one wants to end up alone with me.
“As you wish,” he says, walking with me across the courtyard and opening the gate.
Ferenc
It doesn’t help my stomach is churning in a way I’ve never experienced before. I sit at my desk and hold it for a brief second, removing my hand the minute Viktor ambles in.
“Fucking Király have fucked us over,” I explode as he closes the door. “Dominik has told the Monster Council the rogue vampire is not under his control and they should look to my pack for the reason the damned creature was released in the first place.”
“I can deal with the blood sucker if you wish.” Viktor extends his wings. “He’ll come to wish he’d not left his coffin.”
