CHAPTER 1

SADIE

Welcome to Mystic Falls, Home of the Fighting Foxes, the sign read as Sadie drove into the quaint little town of Mystic Falls.

Well, there it was. The small town where Sadie had spent time growing up was going to become her new home. At least she hoped it would.

She pulled up to the one stoplight in town that sat next to Fipp’s Market and the town square. This was very different from Nashville, but different was what she was looking for. She turned down Apple Tree Lane to find her new house.

There was her new house. A charming little white house with rose bushes and pink shutters with little cut out hearts on them. While it wasn’t her style, it at least held good memories. This had been the home of her aunt growing up, her aunt who had sadly passed away a few months ago leaving her this house.

She would miss her Aunt Rosemary terribly. Living this house would be full of reminders of her. But it would also be a fresh start, which she needed now more than ever.

On her porch was a man in khaki pants, a navy-blue polo, and a smile that could only belong to a big fish in a little pond.

She turned off her engine and got out, steeling herself to deal with all of this.

"Are you Ms. Dade?" he asked as he descended the stairs, paperwork in hand.

"Yes, sir, that's me," she said as she shook his outstretched hand.

"Welcome to Mystic Falls, I’m Derek Fipp.” he said with an outstretched hand. “I have all the paperwork and keys right here if you want to sign. Let's go in, shall we?"

She followed him up the stairs as he unlocked the door. He pushed it open, and the smell alone was enough to transport her back to her childhood.

As they walked into the kitchen to sign the paperwork an orange cat wound her way between her legs. Sadie bent down and scratched his ears as a loud purr sounded from him.

"Hello, George," she said to the cat.

"My brother's been taking care of the cat. I'm sure he'll be happy to have someone in this house."

"Your brother?"

"Yes," he said as he opened the folder with the paperwork. "He lives next door and has been keeping an eye on the place until you could get here."

He set a pen down on the table. "Could you sign here?" he pointed, and she signed. "And here, and initial here."

She did and gave him back his pen.

"That's all you need, Ms. Dade. You can pick a copy of the deed up at the courthouse in a few weeks once I get all this paperwork turned in."

"Thank you," she said, shaking his hand again.

"If you have any other questions about the estate please don't hesitate to call me," he said as they walked to the door.

She gave a simple nod and said ‘thank you’ as he descended the stairs.

Once he was gone, she closed the door and looked around her. She stood in a formal living room filled with flowers, dollies, and more pink than she’d ever owned. Well, that wasn’t true anymore, considering she owned all of this now. It was going to take her a while to wrap her head around that. This was one way to actually on a house in this day and age, she thought to herself with a sigh.

Still, while she would give anything to talk to her great aunt about everything that had happened in the last couple months, her aunt was still here helping her and offering her a fresh start.

She plopped down on the uncomfortable couch as the smell of potpourri enveloped her. Her aunt had told her that this house was hers and to make any changes she saw fit. Getting rid of the bowl of stale smelling weirdness next to her was the first step. Then she would figure it out from there.

She picked up the ornate crystal bowl and made her way to the trash can and tossed its contents in before depositing the bowl on the counter and heading out to her car to collected the stuff she’d managed to bring. Then she would figure out her life. It was time.
