CHAPTER 20
LUCAS
The feel of Sadie's soft hand holding tight to his own as they made their way to his truck made his heart fucking sing. She'd been reserved, but he'd seen a couple of the looks she'd given him. Even if he was trying to ignore them, because the last thing he needed was an erection while wearing a cup. Plus, she was sitting right next to his mother. But not anymore.
No, now they were making their way to his truck hand in hand after a winning game. Something had shifted since their night on that porch swing and the other night in his house, and he was hoping she might be up to taking it a little further today.
Once they got to his truck, he flung his bag in the back before opening her door and helping her in. He took a deep breath and tried to settle his nerves as he made his way around to the other side. As he climbed into the cab she turned and smiled at him.
"Do you want to come over and maybe we can order a pizza and watch a movie?" he asked.
"I need to feed George first, but yeah, I'd like that."
After they turned out of the parking lot, he took her hand again and made his home quickly and quietly to his house.
"I'll deal with this," he said as he got his bag out of the back. "Trust me, you don't want to be there for this."
She laughed and it was music to his fucking ears.
"I'll go feed George and I'll be over in a bit."
As she left, he took care of his stinky gear and got the pizza ordered. As he waited for her return he paced his foyer. They'd go in the basement to watch a movie, that was all they were going to do. He kept telling himself that, because he needed to get his expectations in control. Because in the same breath he told himself that, he was hoping for more. Much more.
After a few more moments of pacing there was a small knock at the door. Making his way quickly to the door, he stopped briefly to check his hair before pulling the door open. And there she was. The sight of her was just about enough to stop his heart, but that was just how things had been for him since the beginning.
Sometimes, you have that initial attraction, but as you get used to the person some of that goes away. He found the exact opposite was true where Sadie was concerned. The more he got to know her, the more the butterflies intensified. It was like every meeting he found something else about her liked even more than the last time. That had to stop at some point, right? He just wasn't sure when.
"Hi," she said in a breathy voice as she tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Hey," he said, pulling the door fully open. "Come in. I ordered pizza, I wasn't sure what you'd like so I got a pepperoni and one with everything. I'll eat either. If you want something else, I can call and change the order?—"
Reaching out, she placed her small hand on his forearm. "That sounds perfect."
He led her past the living room into the kitchen to the door down to the basement. "I have a good setup for movies down here," he said, opening the door.
She descended the stairs before him. Seriously, what was it about this girl that made him feel like he was in high school again?
While his basement was a great place to watch movies with a big comfy sectional and a huge tv, he used it primarily to watch hockey games as was evident by the Glendale Magic memorabilia covering the walls... and well... everything else.
"Wow," Sadie said, taking it all in. "You really got a man cave thing going huh?"
Lucas shrugged, "I know, it's a lot."
"Hey, I live in a flower garden. So, who am I to judge?"
"What do you want to watch?" he asked as he sat down in the middle of the sectional. It was big enough that she would choose to sit in a couple different places with plenty of space and comfort. But much to his pleasure, she came and sat right next to him. He stretched his arm out along the back of the sofa, and she leaned right into him. Perfect.
"What do you think? Comedy? Romance? Scary?"
"Oooh, let's do horror."
"I like it. Zombies or haunted?"
"Zombies."
"You're a constant surprise, Songbird."
He put on the new zombie movie that had just come out on Streamflix and pulled a blanket over them.
