“Come with me to get a snack,” she insisted, her brown eyes pleading. “You’ll pay and I can save my hard-earned money. I spent all the money you so generously gave to me earlier this morning. Now, I’m starving.” She pouted.

Her snickered. Digging in his cut, he got his wallet and took out a c-note, handing it to her.

“Go eat,” he told her.

She glanced at him through the fringes of her lashes. “Do you want your change back?”

“Keep it, babe,” he said, glancing at Jo again. He wouldn’t miss a hundred dollars.

“Are you sure you don’t need anything to eat?” she asked, slipping the money in her jacket and laying her brown hand on his arm.

“I need to go to Megan and check on her. Tell her about Jo.”

“You look so upset,” she said. “It’ll freak her out if you go to her now.”

Christopher scraped his fingers through his hair. “She’s used to my ugly face.”

“You’re anything but ugly,” Torie said, her shameless eye-fucking finally registering.

He remained silent, though her hand remained on his arm.

“This is where you tell me I’m not ugly either.”

“Fishin’ for compliments, huh, babe?”

“It must not have worked, since you didn’t compliment me.”

“You know you’re pretty,” he countered. “You don’t need me to tell you.”

His words emboldened her. She stared at his mouth. “I want to kiss you,” she whispered. “We can go to my car in the parking lot. You look so sad. I want to ease your pain.”

“Fuckin’ you won’t do that, Torie,” he said with a sigh. “It’ll only bring me more pain. Megan would never forgive me.”

“She wouldn’t have to know.”

Even if he wanted to fuck Torie, which he didn’t, he’d never humiliate Megan in such a way or abuse her trust. He’d already gone over this with Torie. Usually, it pissed him the fuck off, butanger at this time would expend too much energy. Jo might even be able to feel negativity.

“I can’t, babe.”

“Aren’t you even a little tempted?”

Torie was gorgeous, but he only wanted Megan. He shook his head. “Nope.” It was the truth.

She straightened and finally dropped her hand. “Wow. Okay. Uh, wow.”

Christopher turned back to Jo.

“I’m sorry. You can’t come in this area with a mask and gloves,” Torie said in a firm tone.

“Oh, well I’m sorry, I’m coming to get my fucking father,” Rebel snapped, her voice jerking Christopher around. Folding her arms, she glared at him.

“Ain’t did nothin’ so get that fuckin’ accusin’ look off your fuckin’ face.”

“What’s going on, Father?” she demanded. “You’re looking like the walking dead while some random woman is all but drooling over you and Momma is staring like you’ve just sucked all the fucking blood out of her body.”

“This is Torie, Jo’s main nurse. Not a random woman.”

Rebel knew Torie, and vice versa.
