He released her as if she’d burned him.

“Are you just glossing over the fact that Megan solicited Kendall’s help because of this motherfucker?” Uncle Johnnie barked.

“Or that the motherfucker propositionedRebel?” Diesel snarled.

“Or that fact that all the bitches knew and kept it from us,” some random member boomed.

“Just like all you motherfuckers knew what my father was doing with—” She jerked her head in the nurses direction— “and kept it from my mother. And it was everyone. It was me, Momma, Aunt Kendall, and Lolly. We did it to protectyou,” she told her father.

“I don’t need no goddamn protection. And Megan don’t need another best friend, but me!”

“Exactly, you fucking hypocrite. You’re jealous of anyone in Momma’s life and yet you can fuck around with this bitch,” she snarled. “Fuck you, her, andallof you. How fucking dare you fuck off Momma like that?”

Silence. Fucking crickets. Guilty fuckheads.

“Who will I call to report about Molly?” Torie inserted.

“My momma-in-law or Chester, Val’s woman,” Uncle Mort answered.

Daddy snapped his gaze to Uncle Mort. “You always do Megan’s fuckin’ dirty work. Why you ain’t told me about Brett?”

“Loyalty,” Rebel sneered. “The same reason he hasn’t said anything to Momma about Torie.”

Every eye swung to her.

“Exactly,” she said. “She trusts you all.”

“Reb, you got it all wrong,” Uncle Val said.

She glanced away.

“You, uh, you telling your Aunt Zoann?”

Collective groans went up.

“No one betrayed Aunt Meggie,” Grant swore.

Everyone else, including her father and brothers, looked a little sick.

“We wouldn’t do that to her,” Grant continued, their unofficial mouthpiece. “Especially your dad. Youknowthat. You’re just emotional right now.”

“Compared to Jo, this is inconsequential,” Torie added.

“Save it,” Rebel ordered harshly. “It seems to be my little sister is inconsequential since this circus that you created is going merrily along.”

“Goddamn, you’re harsh, Rebel,” CJ said. “Do you think we’d be down here if Jo—”

“Do we have to leave tomorrow?” Torie cut in, a plea in her voice. She was staring at Daddy. “My boy is barely packed.”

“If that’s what Kendall put in the contract, Torie,” he said with irritation, “then, yeah, you have to leave tomorrow.”

“You told meyouwere drawing up the terms.”

“I’mnot the motherfuckin’ attorney.”

“But—”

“Oh my God. Woman-to-woman, have some fucking self-respect,” Rebel ordered. “It’s over. He doesn’t want you.”
