Harley’s eyes widened.

“Bunny and I carry guns. Meggie doesn’t. She doesn’t like them. Zoann was never taught to shoot, and Johnnie doesn’t want Kendall packing heat.” She shrugged. “Momma carries a knife and a gun.” She smiled tenderly. “Let’s circulate while your daddy talks to Dan.”

She walked away, leaving Harley speechless and even more confused.

Chapter Forty

The next afternoon, Meggie found herself back at the coffee shop awaiting Gypsy’s arrival. Once again, Christopher left in the early hours, promising to return as soon as possible. His actions both shocked her and raised her suspicions, especially after last night’s confessions from each of them. Normally, after her medical crisis, he glued himself to her side.

Despite Mortician’s reassurances and Christopher saying otherwise, maybe, Johnnie was right and her husband was tired of her many illnesses and difficult pregnancies. She was just so exhausted, she couldn’t make sense of anything. She hadn’t even made it to the hospital to see Jo. With Gypsy running late, Meggie was beginning to rethink her decision to drive herself over, but her friend had sounded so frantic.

As another ten minutes trudged by, Meggie texted Gypsy that she was going home. She tried Christopher, but didn’t get an answer, so she purchased pastries for each of her kids, then headed to her Lexus.

Halfway to the SUV, a man inserted himself in front of her in a sad repeat of yesterday. However, it wasn’t Johnnie.

“Meggie.”

“Bash.” She’d never met Cee Cee’s oldest son, but Christopher had told her about him a few years ago. She couldn’t remember under what context. However, the Caldwell emerald eyes, aquiline nose, and masculine jaw made his kinship unmistakable.

Unlike Christopher’s beautiful full mouth, cruelty thinned Bash’s lips. He was a tall, muscular man with huge hands, like his father and brother.

It didn’t surprise her that he knew her. As Christopher’s wife, many people were aware of her existence, even if they’d never seen her. As Bash’s sister-in-law, he’d make it a point to find out about her.

“What do you want?” she demanded, oddly calm and bone tired.

“To say hello.”

“Hello. Now, excuse me.” She started around him, but he blocked her. She sighed. “If you have a message for Christopher, I’ll relay it to him.”

His nostrils flared. “Maybe, I just want a family reunion with my little brother.”

“No, maybe, you want to die. Christopher isn’t interested in reuniting with you.”

His mouth twisted into a nasty smile. “You’re so sure what he wants, you little cunt. He was with me yesterday. With my own two eyes, I watched him fuck two sluts.”

Christopher said he hadn’t cheated. Supposedly, he was with Derby. If her husband had dealings with Bash, an enemy, he would’ve had the men he trusted the most at his side. “You’re a liar. My husband is faithful to me.”

“According to Derby, Outlaw’smostlyfaithful.” Bash sniffed. “Outlaw himself said that no man’s happy sticking his cock in one slit for the rest of his life.”

Given her knowledge of yesterday’s events, the words were like a knife twisting in her heart and she stumbled back, dropping her box of pastries. Christopher never lied to her, yet the events of yesterday, Johnnie’s barrage of taunts, and now Bash’s words, undermined her confidence in herself, her husband, and the state of her marriage.

Bash laughed, and the sound of motorcycle pipes barely penetrated her pain and despair.

“I’m going to fuck you before I kill you, Megan,” he swore, bending close to her ear to impart those words. “I’m sick of waiting.”

“Meggie!”

She thought she imagined Derby calling her name, until he was suddenly in front of her with another man who had red hair and a ruddy color.

“Derby—”

“Meggie, babe, I’m sorry I’m late,” Gypsy said, rushing up to the small, little group, hot on Derby’s heels. She sidled a glance at Derby and tears filled her eyes. She nodded to the other man. “Hey, Dez.”

“What the fuck are you doing here, motherfucker?” Derby demanded, glaring at Bash and preventing a response from Dez. “If Outlaw finds out you’re fucking with his bitch, he will fucking kill you—”

“Motherfucker had the chance to kill me,” Bash snapped. “He didn’t.”

“I didn’t come for this,” Gypsy said stiffly, sniffling.
