“But—”
Dinah opened the door and gasped. Reverand Sharper Banks brushed past her, followed by Logan Donovan.
“Ten, twelve more years and she’ll turn a good profit,” he said, nodding to Meggie.
Reverand Banks glared at the man. “Shut the fuck up, Logan.”
Logan stiffened, and his eyes burned with such hatred a chill slithered through Dinah. She held Meggie tighter and kissed her cheek, regretting her earlier loss of control.
“Go to your room, sweetheart.” She gave her another kiss and set her on her feet. “Mommie will be in as soon as I can.”
“’Kay, Mommie,” she said, traces of tears lingering in her voice. She ran away, unaware of the winds of violence brewing between the two men.
“I-I called you, Reverend Banks,” Dinah said with as much equanimity as possible. “You didn’t inform me you were bringing a guest.” Especially Logan Donovan.
The minister gave her a half-smile but didn’t respond.
“Why am I here, Sharper?” Logan demanded.
Sharper’s eyes gleamed. “To see Meggie. Joe’s daughter.”
Logan’s gray eyes widened, then narrowed. “Why areyouhere?”
“Dinah called me. Joe isn’t falling into line as she thought he would when she opened her pussy to him.”
Dinah gasped at the crudity. “I amnotthat Roxanne woman.”
“You’re not better than her, bitch,” Sharper snarled.
“Is that K-P’s cunt? The one who pushed out his half-breed?”
Sharper stiffened. “Shut the fuck up before I cut your head off and throw it in the garbage.”
“I’m just calling it as I see it,” Logan said in dismissal. He held up his hands when Sharper took a step toward him. “I’m agreeing with you, Sharper. I give her points for ferocity. I tried my fucking best to break her.” He shook his head sadly. “No matter the names I called her, what I threatened, the most I got from her were tears.”
“I can only imaginesomeof the names,” Sharper seethed with dislike.
“I’ll bet you can, boy,” Logan said with a laugh.
Wildness crept into Reverend Banks’s eyes, but Logan laughed harder.
“I can kill you, Logan, but then I’ll have to kill Joe’s cunts.”
“I beg your pardon?” Dinah said with as much dignity as possible, sorry she’d ever called Sharper Banks.
“Not granted,” he said coldly, sparing Dinah a brief glance before focusing on Logan again. “Shut the fuck up or you, Dinah, and Meggie are dead.”
“You’d kill Joe’s girl as much as he loves her?” Logan asked, appalled.
“He does love me,” Dinah said with meaning. “My death would—”
“Not you, stupid bitch,” Sharper snapped. “Meggie. I don’t give a fuck if he lovesyouor not. He adores the child.” His nostrils flared. “I still owe him for double-crossing me on my wedding day.”
“Rack saved me,” Logan reminded Sharper, the words mystifying Dinah. “Since you hate me now, why would you make my Joe suffer by harming his daughter?”
“You don’t give a rat’s ass about that little bitch. I could run a stake through her and it wouldn’t matter, Logan.”
Trembles assailed Dinah. “I’ve made a mistake! Please leave.”
