“Johnnie cut off Big Joe head, Mort, and sent it to the club. Suppose Bash somehow involved with Harris and Johnnie know? Suppose they cut Molly mama head off as a warning?”
“Fuck. Bash is Cee Cee son. That motherfucker wanted to chop off Meggie girl head to send to Prez.”
“My theory make even more sense now, Mort.”
“Johnnie a motherfucker, but he wouldn’t be torturing Meggie to leave without agoodfucking reason. Somewhere deep down, I’m sure that asshole still want to bone her.”
“Man, shut the fuck up with that. We have enough bullshit cropping up. We don’t need to put those fucking words in the air and rekindle his obsession.”
“I know,” Digger sighed. “Kendall been straight, and I like her now. When he turn into a cunt, she turn into a bitch. I’m six years away from fifty, too fucking old to deal with that bullshit.”
Mort sniggered. “Fucking asshole. I’m older than you.”
“I wasn’t responsible for our birth order, bruh.”
“So you think Johnnie in bed with Tom Harris and Bash Caldwell?”
“Bash, yeah. Harris, though, I’m not sure. Rory just happened to be there. It was a message for CJ.”
“Or Ryan,” Mort said, thinking out loud. “Molly his girlfriend.”
“True.”
“I’m going to talk to Brooks,” Mort said. “You do some digging and see what you can come up with.”
“Okay.” Digger finished his beer, set the bottle aside and folded his arms. “I don’t have nothing against her, Mort.”
Mort looked at Meggie again, hanging on Outlaw’s every word, completely wrapped up in him and in love. “So you say. And keep saying. Who the fuck you trying to convince? Me or yourself?”
Digger shrugged. “Sometimes, I wish we were still single.”
“No, sometimes you wishIwas still single. You would’ve been happy having your own family and me all to yourself.”
Guilt crossed Digger’s face.
“I’ll even go so far to say you would never have gotten married if the rest of us hadn’t, but especially me.”
“I love Bunny.”
“I never said you didn’t. I just know you.”
“I don’t have nothing against Bailey, Mort. Besides, without her we wouldn’t have Roxanne.”
“Just like you don’t have anything against Meggie. Prez and me looked out for you, and you were jealous of anybody that came between that.”
“I resent you making me sound like a bitch-ass motherfucker.”
“I’m making you sound exactly like you are.”
“I hate how unhappy you are, Mort,” Digger said, sounding as weary as Mort felt. “Almost as broken up as Prez whenever something going on with Meggie.”
“I appreciate your sympathy, but not your resentment. I don’t want to lose my wife. I love Bailey.”
“I don’t doubtyourlove.”
Mortician stiffened.
“And I don’t doubt Prez love for Meggie or hers for him. As annoying as she can be sometimes, that woman love her some Outlaw. She what ride-or-die look like.”
