Was it Rory’s imagination or did Ryan sound regretful?
“Bash was the one who showedmethe documents. I wouldn’t even know where to begin to find originals or prove their authenticity.”
“Someone in the club is a mole.”
“Someone close to the officers is a mole,” Ryan corrected.
“Again,you.”
“I’ve already told you I’m not.”
A mole wouldn’t admit to being a fucking mole.Still… “You know this shit and have kept it to yourself.”
“Okay, son of the pot.”
“You do make a fine kettle, asshole. Full of steam and hot air.”
“Very fucking funny.”
“Do you hear me laughing?” Except for Ryan’s flashlight, pointed toward the ground, it was pitch black in the cave with rapidly dropping temperatures.
“Do you know where my dad is?”
“Nope. He doesn’t know I’m acquainted with Bash. Iassumehe’s near Hortensia General.”
Alarm raced through Rory. “He’s injured.”
“No, stupid. The club supports the hospital. Bash said Cee Cee started that practice. There are back stairwells for members to escape.”
“He’s trying to escape?” Rory asked, clueless.
Ryan huffed. “You must promise me you won’t tell anyone all I’ve revealed. You can talk to Brooks. He knows.”
“What do stairwells have to do with my father?”
“Promise me, Rory. Johnnie, Brooks, and me will be killed. If not by Bash, then by Outlaw.”
Then, Mom, Aunt Zoann and Uncle Val, and Charlotte Redding would be left devastated. The weight of knowledge pressed in on Rory, and he almost ran away.
“You can’t even tell motherfucking CJ.”
CJ would be a sounding board.
Ryan grabbed a handful of Rory’s shirt. “Promise me, cuck.”
The air around Rory felt heavy and thick. An odd premonition of death and destruction hit him, and his nostrils flared. “I promise.”
“Your dad is probably urging Meggie to leave Outlaw. Maybe, offering to pay her off if she disappears and can’t ever be found.”
“Dad wouldn’t do that. If Aunt Meggie left, it would destroy Uncle Christopher.”
“She’s leaving one way or the other.” Ryan released him, and Rory stumbled back. “Let’s see how high and mighty CJ is then. If Johnnie doesn’t convince Meggie to vanish, Bash plans to kill her.”
