The microwave beeped its ending as the bursting of the popcorn slowed to a stop. Holding the phone up, I crossed to the microwave and grabbed the bag from inside.
“Ohhhh, what’ve you got there?”
“Popcorn,” I said. “Kettle corn to be exact.”
On his end, he stood and though I couldn’t see much, it looked like he was pulling pants on or something. Which meant… he slept naked.
Woof. My mouth went dry.
And other parts became totally drenched.
“Well, that settles it,” he said as he tugged a shirt over his bare torso. “I’m coming over. Kettle corn is my favorite.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’renotcoming over here.”
“Why not?”
“Because you should be sleeping.”
“Yeah, butIhave to be up in an hour anyway to be at the bakery. No point in going back to sleep now.”
“Oh, crap. Oh my God, I’m so sorry!”
“It’s okay,” he said. And now he was moving… walking, it seemed, to the door. “Just have breakfast ready for me.”
“Finn, no—”
But it was too late. He’d already disconnected the call.
Chapter Nineteen
Finn
I pulledinto her driveway and cut off my engine, taking an extra moment to sit there in silence.
Haylee video called me…
In the middle of the night.
Sure, it was an accident… or so she wanted me to believe. But I’d gotten enough late-night booty calls to know that this meant she’d been looking at my profile.
Either that or she’d been reading the messages I’d sent her years ago after she’d left Maple Grove.
I had just assumed she’d deleted those messages years ago.
Clearly not.
I ignored the way my heart raced at that thought.
It probably meant nothing.
But it didn’t feel like nothing.
And I couldn’t help but hold on to that shred of hope that maybe, just maybe, she and Ben had broken up tonight, and this was her little ploy to get me to come over.
I smiled to myself and shut my door as quietly as I could so as not to wake Meryl or stir up the dogs.
Before I even made it halfway up the driveway, Haylee appeared at the fence in the backyard, Freckles in her arms, and Tyson at her side.
