“Ugh, of course not. It was way too mushy for us. Which is why this soulmate bullshit, no matter how true, can never be uttered again. Got that?”

Marty laughed, but nodded, making the sign of the cross over her heart. “I promise not to get mushy again for a while.”

Elsa chewed her lip. “But the thing is… even though you and Jim had a fairy tale relationship, it doesn’t mean he was theonlyman who could make you happy. Whoever told Cinderella there was only one Prince Charming was a dick. And a liar.”

Amy snorted, masking her laugh, rather unsuccessfully, with a fake cough and hopping to her feet. “I, uh, forgot the hot towels.”

“Elsa,” Marty scolded, gesturing to Amy. She was young. About Marty’s youngest daughter, Callie’s age.

Elsa waved Marty’s concern away with a flap of her hand. “Oh, come on. First of all, let’s be real. Cinderella had her pick of men at that ball. You can’t tell me this Prince Charming guy was the only one who was meant for her?”

Marty scoffed. “He’s the only one that could make her royalty, though—” But Elsa didn’t let her finish her argument and cut her off. Again.

“And, you can’t get mad at me for this conversation because this morning you were talking about your vibrator in front of my daughter.”

“Shhhh!” Marty glanced around at the busy salon, then whispered. “I joked around in your mostly empty café where I didn’t realize your daughter could hear us. Not in a busy nail salon in the center of town!”

Elsa gave her a side glare. “I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that you called my café empty and implied that it is not in the center of town. Instead, I’m just going to finish by saying that I’mgladyou’re finally going on a date,” Elsa said. “You deserve it.”

Marty smiled, sitting back in the chair and closed her eyes. She did deserve it. And even though she was completely out of practice, and nerves jumped in her belly like grasshoppers on crack… she was excited. And she hadn’t felt this kind of excitement in years. Not since Jim.

I only hope Chris is worth it.
