She glanced at her son through the sides of her eyes. His scar that ran from his temple down the side of his face was barely noticeable anymore, despite years of his insecurity. “You think I should say yes to the date?”

He nodded. “I think you wouldn’t be here talking to me if you didn’twantto say yes.”

This time, it was Marty who squeezed his hand and released it, standing to her feet. “You have to get back to work. Those testicles aren’t going to remove themselves.”

Pushing onto her toes, she kissed Steve’s cheek and he pulled her in tighter for a hug.

He backed away toward his exam room, coffee clutched tightly in his hand. “I want all the dirty details tomorrow!” he called out before disappearing into the back.

Taking her cell phone from her purse, Marty pulled up Chris’s number and dialed before she could chicken out.

He answered on the second ring. “Marty, hi—”

“Yes,” she blurted out, biting her lip to hide her smile. “Let’s do dinner tonight.”

“Really?” Chris sounded surprised. “I mean… that’s great! I just thought I’d have to twist your arm a little more.”

“Well, you don’t. Should I meet you at Jolie? Seven o’clock?”

He chuckled into the phone. “What kind of date would I be if I didn’t pick you up for Valentine’s Day dinner?”

“Okay, then. I’ll text you my address.”

“But… I have a little bad news. I called Jolie after I left Elsa’s and they’re completely booked.”

Marty grinned. “Don’t worry about that.Ican get us a table there.”

“You can? Last minute on Valentine’s Day?” Not for the first time, she heard the shock in his voice.

“I know a guy.”

“Okay then. I’ll pick you up at seven.”

“I’m looking forward to it, Chris.” She hung up and immediately texted Francois, the owner of Jolie. And for the first time in years, her heart fluttered.
