“Yes?”
“Please tell me those aren’t my ripped underwear sitting at the base of the throne,” I said, catching his eyes and gesturing with a tilt of my head.
“Um,” he said awkwardly.
“They were there the entire time the other dragons were here, weren’t they?” I asked.
“Ummm,” he said, getting up and hurrying down the stairs to pocket them, drawing confused looks from the approaching dragons.
“Oh, god,” I moaned, wanting to bury my face in my hands. “That is so embarrassing.”
“Chin up,” Tor said through the corner of his mouth. “Time to be the princess.”
If there was anything that could distract me at the moment, the reminder that I was now dragon royalty was certainly near the top of that list.
I just had to hope I didn’t screw it up.
Chapter Forty-Five
Mia
“It’s a good thing I don’t need my old job anymore,” I said, luxuriating in the presence of Tor behind me, my body molded against his, skin to skin, a soft, satin sheet the only thing covering either of us.
“Why is that?” he asked, kissing the back of my neck.
I shuddered, which produced a pleasant reaction below his waist, but neither of us made a move. The last three days spent at Storm Keep consisted of lots of sitting on the throne, settling the Princedom down, and introducing me to all the various “important” people. During the waking hours, that was. At night, the two of us had retreated to his private quarters to renew acquaintances. Repeatedly. Now, on the morning of the fourth day, once was enough.
Though I could feel him rising to the challenge, there wasn’t enough time. It was a big day.
“Because I’ve been gone for three and a half days of work,” I reminded him. “Somebody kidnapped me and held me here.”
Tor snorted, hot air washing down my back. “The only thing that held you here was the ropesyouinsisted we try out the other night.”
Giggling and blushing all at once, I refrained from responding directly to that comment. It would be unladylike. Just like I had been that night.
Which is why it was so much fun.
“You know what I meant,” I said. “I’ve been here when they were expecting me to be there, working. I hope Ally told them I was okay. I’m sure someone came by to check on me after a day or two.”
I’d confided in Ally before departing for the ball that there was a chance I might be gone for a few days. It irked me not to be able to tell her the truth, but I knew if it everdidcome out, she would understand why. Some things just aren’t for sharing.
“If there’s an ongoing search for you when you return, we shall deal with that then,” Tor said. “Together.”
“Together,” I replied, snuggling up against his firm muscles. I loved howhardhe was. Not even his cock, but the rest of him. His muscles weren’t hard like steel or rock because they had give to them, they were flesh, but he was so …solidthat I felt wrapped in some sort of invincible cocoon when I was in his arms, and I never had in my life experienced anything like it. Nor did I think anything would compare.
“Well,” he said, stretching. “Are you ready? Today is a big day.”
“I know,” I said gleefully, throwing back the sheet. “I can’t wait. It’s going to be so much fun. You’re positive you won’t get in trouble for playing hooky?”
“Wewon’t get in trouble, no,” Tor said. “After all, you are the Princess of Storms now. You have a duty to acquit to the people. I’m not the only one running off for the day.”
“Yeah, but I’m new and human,” I said, turning my head and sticking out my tongue. “I don’t know better.”
Tor started to admonish me, something he’d had to do several times to truly get the point to sink in, but I stopped him.
“I know. ‘It doesn’t matter whether I’m human or dragon because I have thesoulof a dragon, and I sit on the throne, so I must act like one and not use my heritage as an excuse, or the others will walk all over me.’ I know, my love, you have told me. I was just joking around.”
“Very well,” he said warily. “Though I don’t like when you joke about it either.”
