“It’s just a gut instinct.”

He grunted.“I always listen to my gut.”

Then we both laughed, breaking the tension.

When the limo pulled up next to us, Harlow gave me one of those papa-bear looks.I gave him an awkward and unexpected hug.

“Thanks for having my back.”

“Anytime, luv.You know that.”Then he couldn’t help sliding a hand to my ass and giving it a squeeze.“I still have high hopes of scoring a big job with your boyfriend.”

That deserved a punch in the arm, a quick kiss to his cheek, and I was out the door with my backpack.

When I slid into the limo where the door had been cracked open for me, I wasn’t sure what to expect.“I’m sorry for all of this, especially so early in the morning.”

“It’s nice to see you, too.”His smile was more endearing than I remembered, but I was somewhat freaked out the last time I’d seen him, when he’d traded me to Devon to square a debt.

I returned his smile, my cheeks warming.“Sorry.It is good to see you.”

He gave me a long perusal, not seeming to miss anything.“You’re being treated well.”

“Some days like a princess, some days like a field soldier.”

His laugh echoed through the limo.“And somehow that seems to fit you. When this is over, I need to invite you and Devon to my home.”

“I’d like that.”

“But first, why do you think you’re the only one who can save him?”

I hadn’t expected the question.I couldn’t tell him about dreamwalkers, but I owed him something for the risk he was taking, especially if the Council ever found out.“All I can tell you is that there’s something in my blood that can counteract the Poppy.”I wasn’t sure how I knew based solely on my dreams, and it was a huge risk trusting him.

That little gem of information took a moment to process.“Why would you think that?”

“Can you trust me enough to not ask?”I shook my head and glanced out my window.“I’m not sure I know. And I have no proof.”

“If this is true, this isn’t something you want exposed.Especially among other vampires.”

I turned back to him.“I know. And Devon and the cadre will be pissed at me.But Devon has to be saved, and not just for me.”I felt the heat on my cheeks, and though a brow rose, he didn’t say anything.“The two of you have an important mission. One that will be impossible without him.We can’t let Lorenzo win.”

He settled back and studied me, both his brows now lowered in concentration.“You think Lorenzo is involved in this?”

I snorted.“We all do.There just isn’t any proof.”

He nodded.“Devon will owe me a very discreet discussion once he’s put the beast and the Poppy behind him.”

I sighed with relief.

“He’s in the mill.Where exactly, I can’t tell you, and I can’t allow my wolves past the fence. However, no one, not even the Council, could object to a pack of wolves finding another predator in their territory and the need to investigate.”

“You’ve known where he was the whole time?Even back in the city?”

He nodded.“And the trees where he denned.”

I grimaced at the thought of him burrowing in a den.

“We smelled the tainted meat he’d been given, but it was too dangerous to get involved without knowing who was out there.Unfortunately, the smell of the meat was too overpowering for us to catch the scent of whoever delivered it.But we also knew Decker was caring for him.”

“I’m not judging.I’m glad you were monitoring.”
