He didn’t say anything for several minutes.“That’s not what’s happening.”He pulled away and knelt in front of me.His warm gaze brought comfort, his expression deeply concerned.“We need to talk about all the dreams.”

I wasn’t able to comprehend what he was saying, though I’d suspected all along he must know about them.

“Devon!”

We both turned when Lucas raced in.I hadn’t seen him for days, either.

“What?”Devon’s voice turned impatient.

“The apartment.Someone’s there.”

Devon stood so abruptly, I was left dangling on the edge of my seat before I could get my feet under me.He reached out a hand to steady me.

“Get the car.”

Lucas didn’t question him as he stormed back the way he’d come.

“Apartment? Are you talking about my place?”The dreams could wait.I wanted to know who was breaking in again.

“Yes.”Devon strode toward the door, and I ran after him.

“I’m coming, too.”

ChapterFour

Devon pausedto give me a quick scan from head to toe, then back to my face.“The limo.”He didn’t have to yell it; Lucas and those sensitive vamp ears would have heard from the other side of the house.

The limo was out front by the time Devon helped me into a coat and ushered me out the door.Sergi was in the driver’s seat, and Lucas held the door open for us before climbing into the front passenger seat.

I’d lost track of time but, based on the dark, empty streets, it had to be close to morning.Devon sat next to me on the plush bench seat, his hand holding mine.

“Ginger isn’t back yet.”I didn’t make it a question, more of something to break the silence. The dream hovered between us, and I struggled with Devon’s earlier actions.Sorrento didn’t know where I lived, and with his death so recent, this couldn’t be payback.

“No, but she’s on her way.”

He’d been keeping an eye on her.The heaviness that had tightened around my chest lessened, and he must have sensed it because he squeezed my hand.

“Do you have the video feed?”Devon turned on a small monitor I hadn’t noticed before.

“Why would anyone be going there? If it’s Christopher, he’s already tossed the place, and Ginger and I haven’t been back since then.”

“I had the apartment cleaned and everything restored.”

That surprised me.“But how would they know that? They would monitor the place before going in, wouldn’t they?”

He nodded.“I’ve had someone posing as Ginger staying there off and on.”

It didn’t take me long to catch up even with my foggy brain.“You were luring Christopher back.”

He shrugged.“I wasn’t sure it would work, but he’s definitely not going to let this go.Whatever he’s looking for is important to him—or to someone else.”

I was still working through what his last statement meant when Sergi pulled the limo to the curb a block away from the apartment.

Colored images appeared on the screen, displaying the front door of my apartment building. Two people stepped out and hurried away.

“Can you play back from when they entered?”Devon released my hand and moved to the edge of the seat.

The screen went black, then, the front of the apartment building reappeared a few seconds later.Several seconds after that, two beefy men dressed in black entered the building. The front door lock was broken again. It was rare when it worked, and I wasn’t sure why the landlord bothered fixing it.We waited for five minutes, and I expected to see the two men exit.Instead, two more people approached.Another man dressed in black and a woman in a black rain duster and knee-length boots. Her head was down, but she lifted it for a split-second as she jogged up the steps.
