“There had to be more,” Sergi insisted.
More what?More blood, more bodies.Wait.I reached for my neck.“There was a woman.Small, thin with golden hair. She wore my necklace, or one just like it.”
When Sergi shot a look to Lucas, his lips thinned.“Keep her here.Give me a couple of minutes, and if he doesn’t wake by then, slap him until he does.”Then he was out the door, his boots pounding down the hall.
I had no idea where he went, but as soon as Lucas’s grip lessened, I was at Devon’s side, holding his hand.A memory I knew wasn’t mine told me I needed to get back inside the dream, find him, and pull him out of it, but I didn’t know how to do that.I considered putting the necklace on, but I didn’t have it anymore, Devon did, and I had no idea where he kept it.
Maybe I should know where it was kept for moments like this. But would I know what to do with it?It might drop me back to the same dream, but would I have enough control to change what was happening, or would I create a dream worse than the last?
A cold chill swept through me when I recalled the dream when I’d first worn the necklace to bed.I hadn’t been me, and whoever I’d been, I didn’t like. There was no guarantee that wearing the necklace would help this situation. Not without more knowledge of what it could do.
Devon suddenly stopped struggling and sprang up, grabbing my arms. His gaze was unfocused, his grip tight and painful.Lucas rushed to me but hesitated. He didn’t know what to do any more than I did.
For a moment, he seemed to still be in the dream, then his eyes flashed with their vampiric icy-blue glow before settling into their natural color as he scanned the room, first landing on Lucas and then on me.His pallor was off, and based on his pained expression, whatever hell he’d been trapped in was still fresh. He ran his hands over my shoulders.
“Are you injured?”
What a strange question. He must be coming out of the dream having seen everything I had.Yet, he hadn’t been with me when I’d been given a scenic tour through the shifter’s house. At least, I hadn’t felt his presence.Had he been living some other nightmare?
I shook my head, not sure how much to say with Lucas hovering over us.
Then Sergi was back.“Devon? Are you all right?”
He took a moment to answer, his gaze still a bit wild and focused solely on me.“Leave us.”
Neither of his guards moved.I assumed they were doing that vamp stare contest between them because I didn’t take my eyes off Devon—questions, concern, and anguish still alive in his sapphire gaze.
He broke the hold he had on me and forced a smile as he turned to his cadre.“Give us ten minutes.I’ll meet you in my office.”
It was enough for the two vamps to step away, and Devon didn’t say another word until the bedroom door closed.
“I’m sorry.”I sucked in a ragged breath.“I don’t know what happened.I’m sorry I have no control over these damn dreams.”
He pulled me to him.His skin was sticky hot.I didn’t care as I melted into his embrace, only now feeling the shakes overtake me.
“We were at the lake. You were comforting me.”
I nodded against his chest. This would be easier if I didn’t look at him.“Do you know why?”
He squeezed me tighter.“Not at first.”
“Then you saw it.The shifter house.”
His breath hitched, and I knew the answer.New tears traced a path down my face, and with his arms wrapped around me in a vice grip, all I could do was let them fall.“It’s been some time since I’ve seen such carnage.Such waste. And Elijah…”
I hadn’t remembered the name, but he could only be speaking of one person.“He was an alpha.”
“Of the Humboldt pack.I met with him earlier this evening.”
I pulled back as far as he would allow, at least far enough to see his face.If I’d expected any residue of his earlier shock, I should have known better. He’d pulled up a shield, his emotions safely tucked away, yet his arms wouldn’t release me.“That seems more than a coincidence.”
“I would agree.”
I dropped my forehead to his chest.“I need to know more about these dreams.”
“And I would agree again.I need to go to my office and calm Sergi and Lucas.Try to get some rest.”He released me, and I stood, realizing we were alone in his bedroom, sitting in his bed.It had seemed so natural, I hadn’t given it a second thought. But now, I needed to get out.
When I reached the door, something sprang to mind.“Did you see the blonde woman in white?”
