“Su-jin was with me last night, so he heard it. Helped, too. Those cymbal crashes are all him.”

Jun danced in place, letting himself bask in the sound of their voices and session instruments. Most of it was keyboards, played by Jaewoong and Su-jin. Yohei had violin training, and he’d been practicing, though he felt very uncertain of his skill. Jaewoong had still cajoled him into contributing to the track.

It was a bleak piece, melodic and beautifully sad. The lyrics were sung in layers, with Su-jin taking point in his upper tenor and falsetto ranges. The rest of them split the rap and the chorus singing between them, Geun and Jun grinding out the darker, deeper notes, and Jaewoong and Yohei filling in the center harmonies.

Glory, for dowry

Cheeks bones of ivory

And money changes hands

Lashes, like gashes

Black flashes over ashes

And money changes hands

Sui-jin

What am I, your idol?

Your doll up on the stage

Cold fingers, pink ginger,

a spice, late night haze

I call you, you stranger,

but you’re dreaming visions of a cage

“Su-jin really ate that falsetto,” Jaewoong said.

Jun nodded, eyes wide. It had sounded good when they taped, but mixed in with the track and balanced between the parts, it was even better. “Now we can send this to Gigi for choreo.”

“She’s in town this weekend.”

“Again?”

Jaewoong’s grin was wicked.

“Mi Hi?” Jun raised an eyebrow.

Jaewoong nodded. He ran his fingers over the keyboard, imitating bells. Jun laughed.

“They’re going to some sort of art festival together,” Jaewoong said. “And then Gigi got them tickets to see a musical she worked on. Anyway, I was thinking, for the music video on this one, what about lots of pink and pearls? Sticking to the theme of using the Church grounds, let’s do a full wedding scene, sort of juxtapose the dark sacrifice we did with Raw.”

“We will need it to be visually different.”

“Suits, tuxes, hanbok. Lots of flowers. Make the center really pretty and catch edges of the outside being all decrepit.”

Jun’s visual imagination went into overdrive. He could see it, especially if they gave Su-jin doll makeup.

“Let’s hang a birdcage in the middle for part of it.”

“Going literal?”

“Why not?”
