“Yes. I’d love to. I’m free on Wednesday. Unless you want to wait until the weekend.”

“Wednesday is a long enough wait. I’ll pick you up at seven.”

We held each other’s gaze again. It was like we were in a Mexican standoff, neither willing to walk away.

“Mom.” Danny’s voice pulled me from the trance Drake’s eyes had me in.

He dropped his gaze and seemed to stiffen as Danny approached.

“I’m hungry. Oh hi.” Danny beamed up at him. “Who are you?”

“My name is Drake.”

“Are you here to date my mom?”

“Drake!” I blurted out.

Megan fell into a fit of giggles beside me.

“Actually, I am. Is that okay?”

“I guess. Although I do like Doctor Craig. But he keeps leaving my mom, making her sad. Will you leave her on a date like him?”

“I can promise I wouldn’t do that. I’m not a doctor, though. Is that a problem?”

“Depends. What do you do?”

I couldn’t tear my eyes off the banter going on between these two. Danny was grilling him like a Russian spy, and Drake was allowing it.

“I own a private security company.”

“Hum. Okay. That’s cool, I guess. Mom?” Danny turned to face me. “Can I get some food?”

“I got this. Come on Sherlock Holmes, let’s go round up some breakfast.” Megan tugged him inside and pushed the door shut.

For a moment we said nothing. “I’m sorry about that. This whole mom dating thing has him riled up.”

“He seems like a good kid.” Drake chuckled.

“Like I said, he’s his father’s child.”

“So… Wednesday?”

“Sounds good. And thanks again for the phone.” I held up the brand-new iPhone and shook the box.

“I wrote my number down on the inside of the lid. Text me once you get it set up and we’ll hash out the details for our date.”

“Okay.” Drake stepped forward and paused. “I want to kiss you.”

“Okay,” I murmured just as his lips found mine.

My whole body tingled with awareness as his tongue slipped between the seam. His fingers wound through my hair as he pulled me closer. I found myself pressed against the door as we lost ourselves in the moment.

“Shit.” Drake pulled away. “I didn’t mean for it to go that far.”

“It’s okay. I certainly didn’t stop you—again.” I laughed. This was the second time our kiss had gotten so hot.

“Call me.” Drake grinned as he backed down the steps. “I need to leave before I forget how to be a gentleman.”
