Pressing another kiss to her lips, I hurried out the door and climbed into my truck. I smiled when I saw her standing at the door, watching as I backed out. I was totally fucked. I hadn’t meant for this to happen. But the moment she opened the door to her house and let me in, the overwhelming need to possess her, threw all rational thought out the window. Alex was waiting for me when I pulled into the bar parking lot.
“What the fuck? You said you’d be right back.” I heard him, but I was in a trance as I stared out the window. “Hey, man, you alright?”
I put the truck in drive and pulled out onto the street. Ten years. She had waited for me to come home for ten fucking years.
“Drake. Man. You’re kind of freaking me out. What’s wrong?”
I blinked before uttering the words I never thought I would say.
“I have a son.”
Mackenzie
Megan stared at me in disbelief. “You’re telling me you made out with a complete stranger?”
“Yes.” I tipped my coffee cup to my lips and let the warm liquid heat my insides.
“And Austin left you again?”
I nodded. “Yep. Which is how I wound up in Drake’s truck with him. He brought me and Danny home last night—after breaking my cell phone.”
“He broke your phone?”
“Not on purpose. He sorta snuck up on me and startled me, causing me to drop it.”
“Tell me again why Austin suddenly disappeared?”
I recounted his story, reminding Megan this was the second time it had happened. “What?” Her expression gave me pause.
“Don’t you think if there was a massive pileup on the interstate it would have been on the news. Not to mention my roommate would have mentioned it this morning when he got home.”
I had forgotten about the fact her roommate worked at the hospital as an emergency room nurse. “So, he lied?”
“I don’t know. But it sure seems that way.”
A knock at the door had both Megan and me jumping. “What the hell? Who would be here on a Sunday morning?”
I made my way to the door; Danny was completely oblivious as he stared at the television. Megan stood behind me and gasped when I pulled the door open. There on my front stoop was Drake. He looked just as good as I remembered, making my chest constrict with desire.
“Morning.” He beamed as he held out a box. “I brought you a new phone. I realized this morning I couldn’t call you because, one, I didn’t get your number, and two, I had broken your phone.”
I pulled the box from his hand, our fingers brushing when I did. The same electric shock tingled, causing me to blush. “Thank you, but you didn’t have to do this. I had phone insurance.”
“I know. But it gave me an excuse to see you again.”
I could feel Megan’s eyes on me as I held Drake’s gaze. It wasn’t until she cleared her throat that I realized how long we had been staring at each other.
“I’m Megan, the best friend.”
Drake pulled her hand into a firm grip and shook it. “Drake Powell.”
“Would you like to come in for coffee?” She elbowed me in the ribs. “Kenzie makes a mean cup of joe.”
Drake peered inside and seemed to freeze when he caught sight of Danny. “Danny won’t notice if you’re worried. He’s lost to the world of Pikachu right now.”
“I…” He paused, his eyes never wavering from Danny. “I don’t want to intrude. But I would like to take you out. If you’re willing.”
My face heated as I watched Megan burst into a massive grin. “She most definitely is. Aren’t you, Kenz?”
