“Fuck.” I tried Megan. When she didn’t answer, I groaned. “Double fuck.”
“Everything alright?” The voice startled me, causing me to drop my phone. It shattered on impact, making me swear again. “Shit. I didn’t mean to startle you like that.” He bent down and picked up my phone, which was now useless.
“Now what am I going to do?” I stared at the damaged cell in my palm.
“Where’s your husband?”
“Husband?” I furrowed my brow in confusion.
“The man you were with. I assumed he was your husband.”
“Austin? No. We’re dating, I guess. He had an emergency at the hospital and had to leave.”
“And he just left you here without a ride?”
I laughed. “No. He wanted to take us home, but we weren’t ready to go. I was going to have my father-in-law come get us, but he isn’t answering.”
“I thought you said you weren’t married.”
“Look. It’s not really any of your business—Drake, was it?” I put my hand out for Danny to take it. “Can I just borrow your phone to call an Uber?”
“How about you let me take you home? I did break your phone after all—one I plan to replace as soon as possible.”
I blinked, shocked that this stranger had offered me and my son a ride. “I don’t know.”
“I promise no funny business. Just let me make it up to you guys by taking you home.”
Glancing down at Danny, I realized he was exhausted. His arm had to be killing him by now, and standing around wasn’t helping. “Fine. Thank you.”
I watched as he called someone on the phone and let them know he was giving us a ride and would be back for him later on. “Your friend?”
“Yeah. He’s at the bar chatting up some woman. He’ll be fine until I get back.”
Drake helped me and Danny into his truck. I watched him as he rounded the front end and still couldn’t shake the feeling that I knew him. His voice reminded me of someone I knew, but I couldn’t place my finger on who. I was pretty certain I would remember meeting someone as good looking as him, and I didn’t, but that didn’t stop the feeling that I had met him somewhere.
“I appreciate you doing this. I don’t know if he would have lasted waiting on an Uber.”
Drake glanced into the backseat with a questioning gaze. “How did he break his arm?”
“Monkey bars.”
“Ouch.”
“He’s so much like his dad its unnerving. Every day I see more and more of him in Danny.”
I watched as Drake furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. It was odd for me to talk so openly with a stranger, but I felt an odd sense of comfort with him.
“His dad isn’t around?” Drake probed.
“No. He died before Danny was born.” I watched as Drake’s grip tightened on the steering wheel. “It’s no big deal. I had my in-laws and my best friend to help me.”
“How old is Danny again?”
“He’ll be ten in a month.”
Drake
There was no fucking way. Was it possible?
