Nothing could compare to the sheer happiness I felt as we all gathered in the backyard of Danny’s parents’ house. It was a typical Saturday, one where we all stood around as the smoke from the barbeque filled the air. I loved being part of his family, having lost mine at a young age, Danny’s had taken me in and made me feel a part of something.

Danny and I had met in school when we were twelve. Fromthat moment on, we were inseparable. When my dad died a few years later, his parents took me in. My mother passed away when I was a baby from cancer, and the death of my dad left me an orphan. Danny’s parents had been close friends with my dad, so they immediately offered to take me in. At sixteen, something changed between Danny and me and now at nearly twenty-one, we were the epitome of soul mates. We were almost done with our college degrees and ready to start our lives together. He was majoring in criminal psychology and I was working on my education degree. We talked about marriage, but agreed college needed to come first.

As I watched him across the yard, my gut churned with unease. Danny had been acting weird the last few weeks. I felt like he had been pulling away from me—from us. He assured me it was just the stress of school and not to worry—but I couldn’t stop the feelings from being there. Even last night, when we made love, he felt disconnected. We had argued about it, but eventually found ourselves wrapped up in each other again. I couldn’t stop the blush that creeped up my skin as I recalled the way he had touched me.

“I love you, Kenzie. I’m sorry I’ve been so distant these last few weeks.”

“It’s okay. I know you’re anal about your grades and this semester has been hard on you.”

Danny leaned forward and captured my mouth with his. His kiss was heated and urgent as his tongue slipped between my lips, pulling a moan from deep within my chest. Danny’s hand slid down my side and gripped my ass as he ground his arousal into me. His touch was setting my skin ablaze with a burning need as I wiggled beneath him.

“Please,” I whimpered as I wrapped my legs around his back.

“God, you’re so fucking hot.” Danny licked and nipped at my flesh as he dragged his tongue down my neck. His hand danced between us as he slipped his palm beneath my panties and cupped my sex. “Is this what you want, baby?”

“Yes.” I bucked my hips into his touch, just as he pushed a finger between my folds.

Danny pumped his digit into my channel, curving his finger to stroke the sensitive spot buried deep inside. His thumb pressed against my swollen nub, eliciting a scream of pleasure from my lips. It was like he was the fire engulfing me in an inferno of lust. Shredding my panties from my body, he tossed them to the floor as he pushed my legs apart.

“Such a beautiful pussy.” He fingered my opening as he pumped his cock. “This pussy belongs to me, Kenzie. No one else. Say it. Say this pussy is mine.”

“It’s yours. Please, Danny.”

“Please what?”

“Fuck me.”

I buried my face into the beautiful bouquet of Forget-me-Nots Danny had surprised me with. The beautiful blue petals reminded me of his eyes, forever linking the flower to our memories together. They say the flower represents genuine love, which detailed our love to perfection. Danny had once said they were our flower because it symbolized our faithful love and commitment to one another.

“Penny for your thoughts?” Danny’s deep voice snapped me from the memory. He brushed my hair from my shoulder and pressed a kiss to the bare skin.

“Just thinking about last night.” My lips turned up in a grin as my eyes grew heavy with lust. I took in his jovial expression as he watched me.

“Oh yeah? What about last night?” He squeezed me against him, his body pressing into mine.

“Danny,” I growled. “Not here. Your parents are watching us.”

He glanced up and grinned. “They know we’re in love, Kenz. I’m pretty sure they already have us married off with kids in their heads.”

“Probably. Doesn’t mean we’re going to discuss our bedroom escapades at their barbeque so everyone can hear.”

“Kenz.” Danny spun me around to face him. “You know I love you, right?”

I cupped his cheek and furrowed my brows. “Of course.”

“I just need you to remember that everything I do is for us… for you.”

“Danny, you’re talking crazy. Is something wrong?”

“No.” He pressed his lips to mine. “I just wanted to make sure I reminded you, that you own my heart and soul. And that I will love you forever and always—no matter what.”

“Forever and always,” I muttered against his lips.

Had I known that would be the last time I spoke those words to him; I would have held on to him a little longer. Because nothing prepared me for what was to come. I didn’t know my heart would be ripped from my chest and tossed on the ground, still beating later that evening.

People say when you lose something you love your life is forever altered in a way you can’t comprehend. No words have ever rung truer in this moment. I stared at the ground that held my soul. The space that imprisoned the man I loved—the man who had just days prior promised to love me forever and always. I didn’t realize when he said it, he was lying.
