“No, sir. Only the royals have them. I can radio the castle and see if one was left behind.” He disappeared into the guard shack.
“We are wasting time.” Dimitra paced, “We need to go now.”
“Let’s wait and see if he can get a phone. I’ll call Dylan for a ride.”
“No. I don’t want to risk their lives. Let’s go.”
Dimitra started to walk off on foot. Jason jogged to catch up, “Slow down. You can’t go alone.”
The guard came out, running to meet them, “I asked them to send word to the others that you are alive. I also told them about the cars.”
“It doesn’t matter. We need to start walking, or it will be too late.”
The guard nodded, walking in step with them. Dimitra gripped Jason’s hand, “No matter what, Helix has to die. Do you understand what I am saying?”
“Yes…” Jason nodded, glancing at the guard.
“I don’t think you do. If it comes down to a choice of him or me – you kill him.”
“Don’t ask me to do that. If I have to save you or kill him, your life is too important to me.”
“But…” the guard cut her words off.
“I’ll do it, Your Majesty.”
Dimitra placed her hand on his forearm, “Thank you.”
Jason growled, “No… if she is in danger – her life is to come first. Do you understand me?”
“Jason,” Dimitra laced her fingers with his, “I am the Queen. He cannot go against a Queen’s orders.”
“Well… let’s hope it isn’t a choice then. If she dies because you chose his death over her life – I’ll kill you myself.”
Chapter 25
Men poured from the woods, stepping out into the grass in front of Emersyn. Her hands fisted at her sides as she tried to contain her power.
“It’s not too late, Helix. We can end this without bloodshed.”
“The only way this ends is your surrender or your death.”
Emersyn glanced to her side, nodding her head slightly. It was the signal to the others to reveal themselves. Helix smiled as he watched the guards and remaining Queens emerge to stand beside Emersyn.
“Brother,” Onika spoke, “You were not the only one betrayed and lied to. End this mockery and have your men stand down.”
“I will fight to the death. The thrones are mine.” Helix motioned his hand, calling forth his men.
Emersyn released her power, allowing the earth to help them. Vines sprung from the dirt, wrapping around the legs of men charging toward them. Sarifena called forth her magic, forming storm clouds filled with rain. This fueled Amalee, giving her magic an even more powerful charge. Lightening screamed down from the heavens, striking the ground at their attacker's feet. Rory moved rocks, flinging as weapons.
The six kingdom’s men fought with those that managed to get through the line. Emersyn screamed out as she watched a man approach Luca from the back. Onika let her rage explode. Consuming the man entirely. He dropped to his knees, screaming in fear, giving Luca the chance to strike him down. One by one, they wielded their magic, fighting a foe determined to destroy them.
Helix advanced closer, edging his way to the Queens, who were standing in a huddle. They were protecting each other, making it easy for him to take them all out. Men from both sides kept the Queens busy, making his approach all too easy.
Dimitra and Jason burst through the trees. The horror nearly caught her off guard, causing her to falter. She scanned the field, finding the others huddled in the center. The sky was angry with magic, raining hellfire down with Amalee’s lightning. Yet, it wasn’t enough. Men were falling on both sides, slain by the wickedness of Helix.
“Go, help the others. The Queens cannot lose their husbands. Protect them at any cost.” Dimitra ordered the guard who’d escorted them. “Jason… I need to get to them.”
“I know. Let’s go.” He grabbed her hand in his and ran towards the chaos.
