Dimitra drew her hands forward, her eyes taking in the empty space where the metal cuff once laid. Running her fingers over her flesh, “How?”

“When you told me the mark on the ceiling was from the burst of power you expelled when we made love earlier… I just thought maybe it would work on your arm.” He drew her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss to the smooth skin. “I was right. Now…” he climbed off the bed, “We need to find some clothes and get the hell out of here.”

“Wait…” she sat up, “so you had sex with me just to try and break the cuff?” her emotions were all over the place. She knew they needed to get the damn cuff off her, but part of her felt betrayed and hurt. She’d realized weeks ago, Jason was her complement. No matter what happened, he would be the one her heart wanted. And now…

“Stop it. Of course, that’s not why I made love to you. I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you all in your head thinking about it when I buried myself in your pussy.” He stepped up to her, tugging her to stand, “Against all reasoning I’ve gone and fallen in love with you, Dimitra. I know it’s crazy – seeing as how you came to be here… but it doesn’t change how I feel.”

Dimitra cupped his cheek, “I’m sorry. You’re right… I would have gotten all trapped in my head, and it probably wouldn’t have worked. And it’s not crazy…” she took a deep breath, “because I love you, too.”

Jason captured her lips in his. Pressing his forehead to hers, “I’d love nothing more than to spend days in bed with you – but we have to go. There’s no telling when Helix will return. I don’t want to be here when he does. Magic or not, he’s crazy enough to have figured out how to stifle your magic another way.”

“Ok… how are we going to get out of here?”

“Let’s see if your magic can break the lock. Maybe with enough light shined on it, it will heat up the lock enough for me to smash it open.”

Nodding, Dimitra moved around him.

“Dimitra, wait.” He grabbed his discarded shirt and tossed it to her, “Put this on. It’s not much, but at least you won’t be walking around in your underwear.” He pulled on his boxers and jeans. “You ready?”

She smiled and stepped close to the door, “Shield your eyes, it’s going to get bright.” Gripping the handle in her palms, she closed her eyes and called her magic forward. The room filled with bright light as she funneled her power into the door. She’d never tried anything like it, but she prayed Jason was right. They needed to leave the cave and quick.

Her body started to weaken as sweat trickled down her neck. Using this much power after all this time was draining. With one last thrust of energy, she shoved her hands against the door. A loud crack filled the room as everything went dark in her head.

Jason had just opened his eyes to see Dimitra collapsing. He jerked forward and cradled her in his arms. Pressing her against his chest, he kicked the heavy door. It gave on impact, making him smile. She’d done it. Dimitra had set them free.

Glancing over his shoulder one last time, Jason carried her through the doorway. It was time to take her home and bring Helix down once and for all.

Chapter 12

“Your Majesty,” Commander Gentry stepped out onto the patio as five sets of eyes turned his way. “I’m sorry… Queen Perse, we have a problem.”

“What is it, Commander?” Amalee sat up a little taller in her chair.

“One of the guards has gone missing.”

“What do you mean ‘gone missing’?” Onika barked, pushing up to stand.

“Onika…” Amalee groaned, “Don’t mind her, Commander. Explain what you mean. How is a guard missing?”

“He was out on patrol this morning and has not reported in. I’ve sent several guards out to look for him, but he has just vanished.”

“That’s absurd.” Emersyn also stood, “people don’t just vanish.”

“I agree,” the Commander rubbed his face, “we are still looking for him – I just wanted to make you aware and ask you to move indoors. We don’t want to risk your safety if foul play was involved.”

“Of course… I’m surprised Dante isn’t already out here carrying me inside.” Amalee laughed.

“Actually,” Commander Gentry smiled, “here he comes now.”

“Amalee,” Dante called out to her.

“I already know, Dante. We’re going inside.”

“Let me help Rory,” he stepped past her and helped a very pregnant Rory up. “Let’s get you ladies inside and comfortable.” As Dante was escorting them into the library, shouting broke out on the far side of the castle.

“What the fuck?” Onika started toward the voices.

“Onika!” Emersyn called out as she and Sarifena hurried toward their sister.
