Chapter 21
“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Jason tugged her hand into his.
“It’s the only way. We’ve got to do something before it’s too late. You heard what Dylan said.”
“It could be a rumor. There has been no formal announcement of your death. What if this is another trick by Helix to draw you out?”
Dimitra looked at the two people who’d given them refuge, “Dotty, Dylan… tell him the rest.”
“There are whispers that men have gone missing.”
“Helix,” Jason sighed, “Of course, he’d recruit more to help him.”
“I’ve got to act now… before his following is too large. The fact he may have innocent men helping him who will surely lose their lives is troublesome enough. We can’t let him grow his army.”
“I know…” Jason let go of her hand and turned his back. His mind knew she was right, but his heart lost so much at the hands of a mad man. Losing her would crush him.
“This is a good plan…”
Jason nodded his head, “You’re right… but it doesn’t make me any less scared. I realize with your magic, you’re a formidable foe to him.”
“But?”
“If you die…” Jason sighed, his shoulders sagging as he rested his hand on the window.
“I won’t. Not with you by my side.”
Dimitra wrapped her arms around his waist, “There is something you need to know. Something I didn’t realize until the cuffs were off.”
“What?” Jason stiffened in her grasp.
“You're my complement. Once my magic flowed freely, I realized you were the one person who completed me. I didn’t tell you…” she took a deep breath, “because I didn’t want you to think it was the only reason I’d fallen in love with you.”
“Complement?” Jason turned and lifted her chin to gaze in her eyes, “I don’t understand.”
“As an Elemental, our souls connect with our one true love. We know the instant we meet them. My mother told me they would recognize us on some level as well, but for us… it’s an overwhelming need to be one with them.”
Jason cupped her cheek, “And that is me?”
Leaning into his palm, “Yes. You are my destiny. I will love no other in my life the way I love you. That’s why I need you to understand I would not risk my life unless I was absolutely sure my plan would work.”
Jason leaned in and pressed his mouth to hers. Her lips parted, taking the intensity of his emotions. It was as though he was binding their life force together for eternity. Breaking apart, he rested his forehead on hers.
“We have a lot to do if we are going to be ready for your plan to work.”
“Does this mean you’ll help me?”
“I may not like the idea of you placing yourself in harm’s way, but I wouldn’t be anywhere but beside you.”
Dimitra smiled as she leaned out of his embrace. Dotty and Dylan had busied themselves to give them privacy.
“Dotty,” Dimitra called out her name, gaining her attention, “I’m going to need your help. And Dylan,” she walked toward the couple, still holding Jason’s hand in hers, “Are you sure you’re comfortable with what I asked you to do?”
“Yes, Your Majesty. I’ll be ready when it’s time.”
Chapter 22
Helix stood at the center of his subjects. Some were there by choice, agreeing it was time for a male to rule the kingdoms. Others… well, a little threat and intimidation worked wonders to amass such an army. One hundred men would help him take the six kingdoms.
