Chapter 27

Dimitra stared at the rock walls of her current prison. They’d moved her, just as Jason told her they would. Where she had no idea. It was cold at night, but warm during the day. Every so often, she caught the scent of the ocean and ash. An odd combination, but she was sure it was what she smelled.

“Here is something for you to eat,” Jason handed her a tray of food.

“Why haven’t you tried to find your sister and run?”

“I have, but he realized what I was doing and sent me here to watch over you.”

Dimitra looked at the man holding her captive. She could see the turmoil inside him. It was like a raging inferno boiling beneath the surface. Jason was a handsome man, well over six feet tall and muscular. His eyes were the most beautiful shade of blue Dimitra had ever seen.

“What happened to your family?”

“I wish I knew the whole story… but,” he moved to stand at the door, “My dad learned who the man was. And his connection to the six kingdoms. When hel-,” Jason caught himself, “When he found out he killed my mother and father. I wasn’t home, but when I learned what happened to them and that my sister had been taken, I didn’t stop until I found her.” He rubbed his head, “I just wasn’t expecting him to be so powerful. He knocked me out. He was going to kill me, but my sister begged him to spare me. That’s how I came to be this…” he waved around himself.

“Become what?”

“A monster.” Jason turned and pressed the door open, “But I swear… I won’t let anything harm you. I’d rather die than let that happen.”

“Why, Jason… I’m not your sister. Why protect me?”

Jason stared at her. Pinning her with the most intense gaze. He turned and opened the door, “I’ll be back tomorrow.”

Shutting her inside once again, Dimitra slumped against the wall and sank to her backside. Watching that door shut her in was the first time she really felt alone.

Watching him leave did something to her that scared her more than being held, prisoner.
