I know Emma isn’t sleeping because her breaths haven’t evened out and she hasn’t relaxed yet.
“What are you thinking about so hard?”
“I miss her.” Her strangled voice lets me know that the tears are flowing again.
I pull her tighter to me, “I know, I’m so sorry. But hopefully soon we will have her home with us. They got served fast, so maybe the court case will go fast too.”
She doesn’t answer, just nods silently against my arm.
My phone rings, breaking the silence.
I reach over to grab it off the table before it can keep ringing and wake up Emma.
Who the fuck is calling me at four in the morning?
Wayne Ryanflashes across the screen. I swipe across the screen as fast as I can. There is no reason they should be calling me right now. Or at all with the lawyers involved.
“Wayne?” I answer frantically.
Sobs fill the other line, and sirens dot the background noise.
“Wayne!” I shout this time as my nerves kick in. I sit up, rolling Emma off my arm quickly as I throw my legs over the side of the bed.
“Roman, it’s Diane.”sniffle, sob, sniffle.I stop in my tracks.
“Diane, what happened? Is Olivia okay?” Emma is sitting up, leaning on my shoulder trying to hear what is happening.
“I think so, but I don’t know for sure. Wayne, he fell while carrying her.”
I place my hand over the speaker of the phone, “Olivia is in the hospital.”
We both hop out of bed finding clothes around the room and rushing down the stairs.
“What do you mean he fell while carrying her? Like he fell on her?”
“He said he got a sharp pain in his chest, then his left side went numb. He stumbled a bit and she landed on the floor, underneath him. It wasn’t a hard fall, he still had her in his arms but the ambulance is taking both of them!” More sobs from her end.
“Text me the hospital, I’ll be there as soon as I can.” I hang up the phone as both Emma and I run out to the car with our shoes dangling from our hands.
In record time, I’m in the truck and have it started.
“What happened?” I can tell even in the dark that her eyes are wide with fear.
“I don’t really know all the details beyond Wayne felt his left side go numb, and he fell while holding Olivia. Go into my phone and plug the hospital in please.”
I tear out of the driveway and down the road toward the direction of the Ryans’ home, assuming the hospital would be close by.
“I texted the family chat.”
“Oh good. Did anyone answer? Like Wyatt, who could give a police escort?” I snort at my half joke. But, I would absolutely take it if he offered.
“Not yet.” She feverishly types away, presumably another text to the group chat.
“Fuck we’re so far away.” I hop on the highway, finally able to go faster than is necessary.
“Rome, what if she’s not okay?”
She fidgets with her phone in her lap, flipping it over, causing the light to flash in the darkness of the cab as it turns each time to face us.
