“I know,” I groan. “But I want to take my time with you tonight.”
Jenna rolls over to look at me and I brush her hair away from her forehead. “Tonight feels different between us, doesn’t it?” she breathes.
“Because it means more now—at least it does to me. I let myself fall.” I pull her into a hungry kiss and lose myself in her until the wee hours of the morning.
I wakeup Saturday morning with a contentment that I haven’t had in years. Jenna is tucked in the crook of my arm, softly breathing on my chest. She sleeps so peacefully, I can’t bear to wake her, I am absolutely enthralled by her. I brush hair out of her closed eyes and she stirs, her eyes fluttering open.
“What time is it?” she murmurs.
I lift my head and glance at my phone on the bedside table. “It’s nine-thirty,” I say. “You can go back to sleep. I know we were up late,” I tease, biting my lip.
Jenna sits up and turns over to look at me, a grin on her face. Something happened last night. Aside from just sleeping together, Jenna and I reached a new level of intimacy. We spent the night exploring every part of each other’s bodies, multiple times. In between, we talked about our childhoods, our dreams, what we wanted for the future. I’ve never been so connected to someone in my life. I can hardly believe that it’s me she’s waking up with. I have no idea how I went my whole life without this woman. “We tired ourselves out.” Jenna giggles. “But, I have work today,” she reminds me.
It’s now or never, I clear my throat. I’ve got to get this off my chest now that I know for sure that Jenna is who I want to spend my life with. “Jenna, before you go to work…I have to?—”
Jenna gives me a sultry grin. “You want more already?” She nuzzles her nose into mine.
I chuckle. “No, I mean, yes. But no. I have to?—”
I’m cut off by a knock at my front door. We eye each other, frowning.
“Are you expecting someone?” Jenna’s brows knit together.
“Not at all. It’s probably a solicitor,” I growl, tossing the blanket off my legs.
Jenna sits up so I can get out of bed. She follows suit and finds some clothes in her bag while I rummage around my clean, unfolded laundry basket for something to wear. She beats me to it.
“I’ll get the door,” she says.
She got dressed awfully fast.
“Maybe I can use my charm to shoo them away.” She grins at me as she walks out of the room. “Come on, Pete.” I hear her say.
The knocking is becoming more incessant, and I can’t help but think this person is very persistent.
“Oh, hello,” Jenna chirps from the entryway. “How can I help you?”
The person on the other end must be just as taken aback by Jenna’s beauty as I am because it’s a moment before they speak.
“Oh, um…sorry. Is Miles here?” The voice is uncertain, and my stomach immediately sinks.
Erin.
I dash out of the bedroom to the foyer, where the woman I love stands face to face with the woman I once loved very much. No one is speaking—they’re sizing each other up.
“Erin.” My voice comes out hoarse.
Jenna whirls around and meets my gaze, licking her lips. Then, she turns back to Erin.
I clear my throat. “What are you… What are you doing here?” I stutter, raking my fingers through my unkempt hair.
Erin glances awkwardly at Jenna and then turns her eyes back toward me. “Can we… –Can we talk?”
“I’m…going to…just—excuse me.” Jenna turns on her toe and marches back toward the bedroom.
“Jenna,” I call after her, dragging a hand down my face. “Ugh,” I groan. I point at Erin. “Please, wait here.”
I don’t wait for a response before I dart down the hallway. Jenna sits in the middle of the bed, her legs folded beneath her. She doesn’t say anything when I come in, she just watches me warily. I sit down on the edge of the bed.
