“Nah. I’ll walk.”
“Do you even know where you are?”
“Have you heard of this thing called Google…?” I tease. He rolls his eyes.
“I’ll drop you off a few streets away if you don’t want to tell me where you live. Don’t be stubborn.”
“Excuse me, I’m not stubborn. I’m trying not to get murdered here.”
“I promise not to murder you.”
“Oh well then, if youpromise.”
Sebastián shakes his head, smiling slightly. The expression softens his features immediately.
I sigh. “Fine,” I say. I wasn’t looking forward to walking through puddles in heels anyways, and the guy isn’t pinging my creep-o-meter.
The drive is as silent as the first one. I’m too preoccupied with thoughts about the cat I just left behind to be sociable, and something tells me Sebastián isn’t the most gregarious person out there.
“Stop here,” I say, a couple of blocks from my house. Sebastián pulls over to the curb and stops the car. I turn to look at him, my hand on the door handle.
“Uh…thanks. For the rides. And sorry about…” I make a gesture at his now soaking passenger seat.
“No problem. And it’s fine,” he says.
I look at him for a moment. His dark eyes look back at me. His dark skin glows in the gloom.
He really is beautiful.
“Okay. Well. Good night.”
“Good night,” he says, and I get out of the car.
The car stays idling for a moment, but I wait until it drives away before I head towards my apartment.
The air is still and damp around me. I walk home slowly, suddenly exhausted. There’s a heaviness in my chest, as if I’ve left something unfinished.
