Pa exhaled. “As good as it gets, right?”

Teddy put his head in his hands, and I rubbed his shoulder. “He’ll get used to it,” I told him. “He’s happy about the baby at least.”

“As he should be,” Pa said. “Anyway, Oliver, you look dead on your feet. Go have a nap.”

“I’m fine,” I lied. I was tired as hell from the heat, and the hearty lunch had made me even drowsier.

“You’re recovering,” Teddy reminded me.

“Take the truck,” Pa offered, but I shook my head.

“We’ll walk. It’s downhill all the way.”

We wanted to help Pa with the cleanup, but he ushered us out of the house. “It’s one pot to soak and filling the dishwasher. I’ll be done in ten minutes. Now, go.”

From my parents’ house, one could overlook most of Beauville. I knew every roof and every bush from this angle. Countless times, I’d gazed at the cluster of trees where Teddy’s cottage was hiding, wondering whether he was home.

Now he held my hand as we walked down the street and onto the lane toward the cottage.

“You’re moving in with me, right?” he said.

I grinned. “Sure. I just have to ask Monty and Jordy to schlep the sofa out via the balcony again.”

“Does it have sentimental value of some kind?”

“Not really.”

“Maybe you could leave it.”

“Maybe. The rest of my stuff will take one afternoon to move.”

“We can do it when you’ve recovered.”

“Sure.”

He hugged me around my shoulders and led me through the door. I eyed the wall opposite, which held such vibrant memories for me. There was the little peg that had dug into my back when Teddy pushed me against it.

We left our shoes in the hallway and headed straight to bed. I dropped my jeans and snuggled under the duvet in my T-shirt and underwear, my eyes closing.

“I’ll bring you a glass of water,” Teddy murmured, combing his fingers through my hair.

“Mmhmm.”

My thoughts drifted, getting hazy. The bed dipped, and a warm body pressed to my back.

Teddy kissed my nape. “I love you, Oliver.”

He covered my belly with his broad palm, and I fell asleep.

When I woke up from my nap, it was raining outside. I squinted at the drops forming on the window. Not exactly the motivation I needed to get out of bed. Besides, wasn’t it Sunday afternoon?

Teddy spooned me, running his hand up and down my front, tracing the curve of my belly. It was still swollen after the heat.

“I want to stay in bed for the rest of the day,” I mumbled into the pillow.

“Mmm. Gladly.”

“Naked.”
