“It’s your lucky day, Don,” Elaine says. “You get to have her virginity.”

Don’s eyes light up at the thought. I’m going to ask Mikhail and Nico to make every single person in this room suffer once I make it out of here. It’s the only thing that’s going to keep me going.

I stare straight back at Don as he hovers over me.

And then a knife goes straight through his throat, sending blood spattering onto my face. Liam yanks the knife out and throws it at the closest guard, landing the knife in his throat. He grabs the gun from the guard and quickly shoots down the other remaining guards.

Elaine screams and runs out the door before she’s shot.

Liam quickly makes work of Richie and the other man who worked for Jack before kicking Don off me.

Then everything is quiet.

The only one who escaped was Elaine. The rest are all dead.

Liam lowers his gun, breathing heavy, and offers me his hand. He saved my life. He could have let me be raped or killed but instead, he put himself in harm’s way to save me.

Why?

Slowly, I take his hand and let him pull me to my feet.

We stare at each other for a moment, his hand around mine, while his other hand grabs my arm. Both of us breathe heavy. Did we just make it out of this intense situation?

And now what?

“We have to go,” he says.

“Right. Yes.”

“Are… are you ok?”

“Why do you ask?”

He runs his hand over his face. It’s still stained from Jack’s blood and now Don’s. “Because you were almost raped. Again.”

“But you saved me. Again. Was that your plan? To save me when you chose…thisoption for me?” I nod down at Don’s dead body.

“I knew if they untied you, it would be easier to save you. It was the only option where death wasn’t instant. Where I could try to fight.”

“So you weren’t just trying to save yourself?”

“I was trying to save myself. I won’t deny that. But… I was also trying to save you.”

I wrap my arms around myself. “You have no reason to care for me.”

“You’re still my wife. And you don’t deserve any of this happening to you. I wanted to save you. Just accept it.”

“Ok,” I finally say after a moment. “I’ll accept it.” Even if I don’t understand it.

“We should go. Elaine got out. She could come back with reinforcements and I don’t even know where the fuck we are.” He grabs my face so suddenly, I can only gasp. “You need to follow my every move. Do as I tell you. I’ll get you to safety, ok?”

I believe him.

I believe him. It might make me naïve but he’s the only one I have right now. And there’s a sincerity in Liam’s eyes that makes him trustworthy.

“Ok,” I say again.

“Good. Let’s go.”
