He cocked a brow at me, his nose almost touching mine. Damn, he was close.

“You think I didn’t check your car out before I let you drive it when I took this job? I take your safety seriously, hen. When are you going to get that through your head?”

“Because I’m a job, right?” I asked, my need for space from him winning out over any support I could have wanted from him.

He let me go reluctantly, keeping a hand close to my elbow as I leaned my ass against my car, pretending I was relaxing rather than using it to stay upright.

“Avery,” he warned.

Exhaustion washed over me, and I gave into the urge to rest, letting my knees buckle until I sat sprawled on the grass.

“Forget it. I don’t want to talk about that right now. In fact, why don’t we wait for your friend in silence?”

Logan paced, watching me from the corner of his eye on each pass, until I was ready to scream. Eventually, he slid down beside me, leaning his head against the car door and silently slipping his fingers through mine.

Unable to resist the olive branch, I squeezed his fingers and laid my head back, watching fluffy wisps of clouds drift across the bright blue of the sky.

“You’re really frustrating me with this hot and cold act, you know?” I blurted.

His fingers spasmed in my grip. I wasn’t sure what made me call him on the game we seemed to be playing, blame it on concussion, or shock, or whatever, but in this moment, I needed him to drop the bullshit.

“You treat me like a burden, that I’m stupid for being attracted to you, and in the next breath, you’re kissing me or looking at me like you want to devour me. We’re both consenting adults, so what the hell?”

Logan sat silently for so long I was ready to scream. A car rumbled past, and I pictured myself running after it, flagging it down, and taking off, just to get away from this head fuck of a bodyguard of mine.

He sighed, the sound carrying with it burdens unspoken.“You couldn’t—”

“Do not tell me I couldn’t handle you. You have no idea what I’m capable of. Don’t make assumptions, Logan. It makes an ass out of you and me.”

In a move so fast my rattled mind could barely track it, he straddled my splayed legs, cupping my jaw in a strong hand and forcing my head back so I could see his huge body looming over me.

“You have no idea the things I want to do to you, Avery. I want to spank the fuck out of you for your bratty attitude. I want to tie you up and fuck every one of your holes until you’re so lost in my possession that you can’t speak. I want to push your boundaries; see you straddle the line of pleasure and pain. You’d take it so beautifully.” He bent down until his cheek was pressed against mine. “I want to give you pleasure until you’re boneless one day, then deny your completion until you’re mad with need the next. You would be entirely mine.”

I shuddered at the growl in his voice, my eyes sliding closed as I surrendered to his words. I wanted everything he was saying. More than I’d ever admit aloud.

A cool breeze danced through the space between us, and I snapped my eyes up to see Logan standing back a step.

“But I was hired to keep you safe, hen. I can’t do that if I’m wrapped up in this thing you want us to start. Your father wouldn’t approve of it, and he’d be right.”

“Fuck my father.”

“That’s not my kink, but that might be between you and him. I’m going to keep doing my job.”

Behind him, a black SUV mounted the curb, and a giant of a man stepped out. Logan was big, but this guy made him look like a grade schooler by comparison. The guy ran a hand through his tousled black hair and surveyed the scene before crossing to Logan and thumping his shoulder with a meaty paw.

“What the hell did you manage to do here?”

Logan shrugged off the hand, but immediately turned to give the guy a man hug.

“Brakes failed. Can your guy take a look and let me know if they’ve been tampered with?”

“Oh, yeah, the car looks like it’s seen better days, but I was talking about what you did to piss her off.”

He came to crouch in front of me, ignoring a warning growl from Logan. He had a ruggedly handsome face, with lines around the eyes that made me think he liked to smile. Dark eyes sparkled at me as he held out a hand.

“Pleased to meet you, ma’am, I’m Bear. It sounds like you’ve had one hell of a morning with this lughead over here.”

The corner of my mouth twitched in response to his gentle smile.
