Sunshine: Hi, baby, I’m at work. Cleaning my office. It’s a mess. What are you doing? I found the stash of Twizzlers in the house. Thank you. I love you.

My smile drops like a lovesick puppy, all dopey and shit.

Fuck.

I had bought the Twizzlers weeks ago, and I forgot.

Me: You’re welcome. I love you so much. I can’t wait to get to you. I’m about to take a shower. I miss you like crazy.

Me: Send me some photos of you. All of you. You are welcome to send pictures of your titties.

Sunshine: I miss you, too. Daisy misses you. I’ll send you pics if you’re a good boy.

I’ll show her agood boy.I drop my sweats and boxers to my ankles, kick them off. I snap her a picture of my massive hard dick. And hit send.

Me: Corazón, is that enough of a good boy for you? Or do you need me to make it cum for you with your name on my lips?

Sunshine: MAX!! Oh my gosh. Give a girl a warning. I nearly spat my coffee out. Sheesh.

Sunshine: That’s a very good boy. Wink. You earned yourself some nudes. Tonight… I’ll make you come when you get home to me.

The depth of the ocean could never keep me from her.

Me: Damn. I want to come home to you now.

Sunshine: I like the sound of that. Home.

Me, too. Every night, we send flirty and dirty texts to each other, and I fall more in love with her every day. For a man whohasn’t received love in my childhood, I think I do pretty well. It’s all because of Rainey. The love she gives pours onto you like a rainstorm. She showered me with it. Taught me how to love. Showed me that falling in love is possible.

Me: Do you believe in an invisible string?

Sunshine: Absolutely, with my whole chest. People are destined to meet, whether it’s through friendships or romantic connections.

I’ve always known she was my invisible string, since the day we saw each other at Highland Academy.

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

RAINEY

“When’s Max returning?” Lana asks with a mouthful of chocolate chip cookie in her mouth. She reaches for a napkin on the table to wipe the chocolate off her face.

“Do you want milk with that?”

Since we were kids, she always had to have milk with a chocolate chip cookie. I unhook the apron from my neck and untie it at the waist. Today has been a slow but steady day at the café. The new hires have been so helpful. I’ve been thinking of taking Max up on his offer. I would like to take some college classes.

She shakes her head, so I answer her, “He’ll be back today. Not sure what time.”

“Good, you’ve been moping around.”

“And you haven’t?” I drawl, pulling a chair out next to Lana.

She side-eyes me.

“Last week, when we went out, you weren’t yourself. I figured you were just tired. Spill the tea.”

She sighs, taking a sip of her espresso. “My dad thinks I work too hard and have no life. Also, he says, he’s heard I’m not in arelationship and it’s not ladylike of me to be with different men. So he said he arranged a marriage for me.”

My eyes go the size of golf balls. “What!” I shout louder than intended. I cover my mouth when customers look my way.
