She plants a kiss on my cheek. “I’d love to be tangled with you all afternoon and night, but unfortunately, we both need to head back to work. You can’t miss your meeting.”

I huff. “Well then, I guess I’ll clean you up. But tonight, I’m picking you and Daisy up after work. I want to cook for you and have you in my bed tonight.”

“You cook?” she teases.

I tickle her side. “Of course, I know how to cook. I have to eat.”

She hums. “I guess I thought you ordered out every meal.”

When you live in a home where parents don’t cook, I had to learn how to, especially when younger kids are in the home. I would get creative with the ingredients that were available.

Grabbing a towel from the restroom in my office, I wipe Rainey’s legs. I would prefer her to walk out with my scent all over her. Rainey Collins is the definition of a work of art. She’s a stunning, amazing woman.

“I have something for you,” I tell her, handing Rainey her clothes. The way she’s eye fucking me as I slip on my boxers has me wanting to catch on fire. She bites that bottom lip of hers, which drives me crazy. “Keep staring like that, and I’ll have you riding me in seconds.”

She laughs and shrugs. “I can’t help it. You’re very handsome, Max.” She slips her jeans on, the ones that shape her ass. “What do you have for me?” she asks, now that we are fully dressed.

I open the drawer in my desk and retrieve the small black box I’ve saved for her. I clear my throat. “Remember when you planned a Christmas in July for me?”

She nods, and her eyes go glassy. Of course, she remembers the night I broke her heart and lost her.

“I bought you a gift. This was before your dad showed up.” And fucked it all up. “It’s not expensive. I didn’t have the money to buy you what I truly wanted. A part of me was embarrassed to give you something that was not worth hundreds. You’re easy, Rainey, easy to love. You never looked down on me, showed mehow to love and have been my rock all these years. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

She takes it from my hold and opens the small box. A tear runs down her cheek, and she pulls out the silver angel wings.

“Oh, Max, they’re beautiful. I love them.”

I kiss the tears leaking from her.

“Thank you.” She hugs me so tightly, and I move her hair to the side, inhaling her vanilla scent.

“You’re welcome, baby. To me, angel wings have a meaning. They symbolize freedom and protection.” I shrug, my ears growing hot. I’ve never bought gifts for anyone. This is a first. “I have another present for you. This one isn’t from four years ago. I missed your birthday. More than one. Hopefully, this will make up for it.” I pull out a white box.

Rainey gasps, and her hands go to her chest. She takes out an alexandrite stone heart necklace with diamonds surrounding it, and a matching pair of earrings. This set was five grand. It’s the beginning of spoiling my girl, just warming her up. Not that the price matters to me or Rainey, but I want to provide her with anything her heart desires.

Her lips press against mine in a gentle, slanting embrace, and my mouth instinctively opens to welcome her every time. She tastes sweet, like the first sip of a sugary drink on a warm summer day.

“I…I’m speechless. These are so beautiful, you didn’t have to, Max, but I love them. You really didn’t have to.”

I seal her lips with a kiss. “I wanted to,tesoro.Take the gift. This is one of many. You’re my girl, and I’ll always want to spoil you.” She wraps me in another embrace. “I love you,” I whisper.

She doesn’t say it back. That’s fine. She’ll say when she’s ready. I just want her to know how much she means to me. She squeezes me a little tighter, though. It feels freeing to express myemotions to Rainey. From “I love you’s” to “you’re my girlfriend” and finally to fighting to fucking.

CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN

RAINEY

Once Max and I clean up our after-sex, messy, sweaty bodies, he gives me another lingering kiss. Sweet titties, we can’t keep our hands to ourselves. As much as I would love to return to one of our homes, I need to head to the café. I’ve been gone for a few hours now.

He sighs, pulling away like it pains him to be apart from me. “I need to get my shit together for the meeting. See you tonight?”

I nod. “Can’t wait.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.” I grin lazily, my fingers playing with the heart of the necklace Max just gave me, and the angel wings dangle from my ears, brushing against my cool skin.

His thumb brushes his bottom lip, covering his curved smile. He takes my breath away. He’s the sweetest, most caring man. Sadly, his father doesn’t see how good of a man he is. Max says he’s not good at expressing his emotions. He’s wrong. Max told me everything I had ever dreamed of hearing. He loves me. I’m his girlfriend. Max might not have been open years back, but he still tried to show me how he felt about me with his physical touch.
