It’s been three days since I’ve seen Dominic, he’s been busy at the restaurant. He sends text messages, asking how I’m doing or about Dante. He’s been more remote, barely talking. He seems to only communicate by texting, but even then, his messages are infrequent. I realize he has plumbing problems going on, but the penetrating tug in my chest says otherwise.

Our date was amazing; I dressed in the sexiest dress Sophie helped pick out. I watched him watch me the entire night, damn, it was hot.

“Hello, earth to Mila Amaro.” Daliah snaps her fingers at me.

I swat them away.

“Are you fantasizing about your hot man?”

“Kinda.”

She wiggles her eyebrows.

“Your ten o’clock is here. Baby photo shoots are the most adorable, especially when it is with twins.”

I prop the newborn twins in a basket, a little blue blanket propping them up. The thought of us growing our family has me smiling as I snap photos of the sweet babies. Dominic and I should discuss us moving in together. I love waking up in his arms. His strong arms wrapped around me, spooning me as he grinds into me. I admit I let him crash my walls down. That last night of sex, the way he worked every part of my body.

“All right, we are all done,” I tell the proud parents as they pick up their bundles of joy. “We will have them ready for pick up next week or we could mail them out to you.”

“Pick up is fine.” She smiles as she coos at the babies.

“Great, see you then.”

As I sit in my reclining chair to eat lunch in my office, my phone buzzes. I look at my text message from Dominic.

Dominic:Baby, can you meet me at my place in like 30 minutes?

Me:Sure, is everything okay?

Dominic:Yes, baby.

Me:Okay, I’ll be there in 30.

Dominic:Okay.

I fix my hair, smoothing out my skirt as I knock on Dominic’s door. The door swings open. I swallow the knot forming in my throat. A grimace of shocked disbelief burns through me. I am peeved at seeing Samantha holding the door in one of Dominic’s T-shirts and messy hair, as if they just had sex. Her ass hanging out, obviously no underwear. She smirks at my reaction.

“What are you doing here?” A feral sneer curls at my lips.

She laughs mirthfully.

“Oh, Dominic didn’t tell you, we are back together. The engagement is on.” She flashes her ring at me, flipping her blonde hair.

“Mmm, we had a wild night last night. He fucked me like he missed me. You just missed him. As you can see, you were just a fling, Mila. A high school crush, but he got it all out of his system. All you were, was just a phase. He told me himself. He begged me for another chance he loves me.”

The remembrance of those photos of them having sex knocks the air out of me. He’s back with her.

I hold back the tears. I won’t let her see me shed a tear for them. She stumbles back, reaching for a paper.

“Oh, here, I found this. I’m assuming he didn’t tell you this either, as you’re not important to him.”

She hands me a paper, labeled from the San Diego Police Department. Opening the paper, I find Rachel’s name, the paper claims the neighbor next door witnessed Rachel as a suspect in the house fire on Marul Lane.

My house.

What the fuck! I’m frozen in place staring at the paper. The bitch speaks.
