Dominic chews on his bottom lip and looks up at me, smiling. “I need to use the restroom… be right back.”
What a chicken shit. Dante has been on cloud nine since Dominic drifted back into our life. He’s been attached at the hip to him. It makes every nightmare, heartbreak, and tear I’ve shed worth it to have my son smiling and happy to have his father back in his life. If I had to do it all over to get this outcome, I’d do it for Dante.
“Dante, a monkey would be too much work to take care of. How about we start with something simple? Humm… How about a kitten?” I suggest.
He wrinkles his nose, thinking. “I’ll think about it.” With that he heads to the living room to play with his toys.
Dominic walks back from the bathroom. I’ve been noticing he keeps checking his phone. I wonder who’s texting him—is it another woman, maybe Samantha? The heaviness in my chest sinks in. His hot breath fans my neck, wrapping his solid bulky arms around my waist.
“Is it almost done?” he breathes out.
I can smell the mint on his breath. Sending goosebumps from head to toe. I turn to meet his eyes. “Twenty minutes,” I say, with a bite to it.
He frowns, putting his palms on the counter. “What’s wrong, Angel?”
I blurt out, not meaning to show any signs of jealousy or insecurity, “Why do you keep checking your phone? You have been doing it all day. I don’t want you to feel forced to be here.” I avert my eyes to my toes not wanting him to see how bothered I am.
He lifts my chin, my gaze cuts to his. His lips brush over mine. “Sweetheart, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than with you two.” He kisses my mouth, then my cheek, he sighs. “It’s my mom, she keeps texting and calling. It’s unimportant; she’s just pissed. I’m not going over for dinner.”
“Oh, it’s okay, you can go.”
He kisses my mouth to silence me. “I don’t want to go. Also, I made it clear to her that I couldn’t be around her if she didn’t accept you and Dante. After what she did to our relationship, I’m pissed at her.” He shrugs. “Remember I told you I wouldn’t let her come between us. I won’t, Angel, it’s you and me forever.”
Forever.
Hearing his words reassures me, but I’m still uncertain. This is all new after all, it’s been five years of separation. His mom’s words linger in my mind.
He’ll leave you.She will always try to come between us. What kind of life and future will we hold with those dynamics in our life?
“Stop thinking,” he says as he presses his lips on mine.
We kiss until someone clears their throat.
“Do you guys mind? I’m hungry. The smell of food woke me up.”
I glance at my New Yorker, staring at us disgustedly. “Uh-huh.” My eyes go back to Dominic, and I grab a fist full of his hair, getting on my tippy toes, kissing him hard. I turn to the cabinet to get bowls without sparring him a glance.
“Fuck, that was hot,” he breathes out.
“OMG, you guys get a room.”
We both exchanged a chuckle.

Since Dominic returned to our lives a week ago, everything has been just wonderful. Twice this week, he left before Dante usually wakes up at the crack of dawn. I believed it would be preferable to go slowly with Dante throughout the period. We have been making up for lost time. We discussed what had occurred after his recovery and remission. I inquired whether he has been receiving checkups. I can't lose him, and I'm scared to death that thecancer will come back. He said once a year.
“I’m good, baby, I’m in the clear. I eat healthy and exercise, I do have cheat meals.”He gave the most adorable smile.
The door to the studio chimes open. My eyes dart to a tall, handsome, muscular man in a police uniform. I haven’t seen Liam in so long, not since high school. He was always sweet and made all the girls swoon and stare after him with desire. He’s never been the relationship type of guy, from what Dominic has told me.
“Liam, it’s been so long.”
A smile ruffles his lips. “Hey, beautiful, Dominic told me where to find you. I wanted to stop by to see you. You look amazing, hot, and beautiful, just like Dominic described you.”
I chuckle and blush. “Whoa, I feel like I need to fan myself, Liam.”
He wraps his arms around me for a tight hug. I love Liam. He’s a fantastic friend. We always joked around. Being one of Dominic’s best friends, he always treated me like a best friend too.
