“No!” It was my turn to be adamant in my response. “Never.”
“Then instead of getting rid of it, you can turn it into something to move your life forward.”
I ran my hand over the smooth cover, and tears welled in my eyes. “It’s been with me a long time.”
Emma put her hand over mine. “And it should stay that way. You have control over it.”
I gave Emma a mischievous smile. “I thought I was supposed to give up control. Let serendipity take the wheel. Wasn’t there a country song about serendipity taking the wheel?” I knew it wasn’t the name, but I wanted to lighten the heaviness.
“Serendipity, take the wheel,” Emma sang off key, which I knew was purposeful since she could carry a tune.
“Catchy.” I nodded. “I see why it was such an enormous hit.”
Emma reached out and ruffled my hair. “Let’s go find you some date clothes.”
I pulled my phone from my pocket. “After I text Robyn to see where she’d like to go.”
“See, you are capable of learning.” Emma gave me a huge smile. Her affection for me was evident in her eyes.
“I love you, Em. Thanks for being you.”
Emma clutched her chest. “You’re killing me.” Then she smiled. “I love you, too, Blake.”
CHAPTER 32
“Look at your rippedshoulders.” Emma straightened the collar of my black cap sleeve shirt. “If you don’t get lucky tonight, Robyn’s blind.”
“That’s not what I’m trying to do.” I glared at Emma to emphasize my point.
“Oh, stop being indignant. I was teasing. You look incredible.”
“Thanks.” I twirled around and looked over my shoulder at the mirror. “Are you certain I should wear these jeans? White makes my ass look bigger.”
Emma slapped my butt. “Hard as a rock. I think Robyn will appreciate the curve.”
“You mean the bubble.”
“Seriously? I don’t think I’d call you a bubble butt.”
“Maybe not to my face,” I teased.
“You’re an idiot.” Emma stood facing me and put one hand on each of my shoulders. She looked into my eyes. “You deservethis, Blake. Go. Have fun. Let Robyn in. See where this might go.”
My chest tightened. “But this is our first date.”
“I didn’t say you had to marry her.” Emma hesitated and then said, “Yet.”
Ugh.She was killing me. My insides were already churning without Emma making it worse.
“I’m giving you shit,” Emma said. “Relax. Enjoy yourself.”
I nodded.
“Now give me a hug and get out of here.”
I wrapped my arms around Emma and squeezed. I held her for a long time, trying to convey how much I appreciated her.
When we broke our embrace, both of our eyes were misty.
