“I haven’t seen you in a week, and you didn’t seem to mind when you moaned the moment I slipped my tongue inside your mouth.”

“Okay,” Noah says, breaking up our spat.

A woman appears at the open door letting us know that dinner is ready, and my frustration with this man and my feelings for him are put on the back burner.

My anxiety returns.

Time for dinner with Noah’s father... who terrifies me.

Elias terrifies me... in a completely different way. Yet I keep poking the bear.

Maybe it’s because I want him to devour me.

As we walk to the dining room, I hear Noah talking to Elias, but their voices are too low for me to make out the words.

All except Elias saying, “I’ll keep her safe.”

My stomach twists, my heart flutters, and tears burn the back of my eyes.

He could protect me.

I can’t let him.

Chase said he’d kill my parents if I told Elias or Noah. And what if Chase hurts them too? I have no doubt Elias could demolish Chase and his newly formed crime organization, but I can’t take that chance. Elias is a reactive man. If I ask for his help, he won’t hesitate to hunt Chase down and murder him. It’s clear this is what he does as a mafia boss, but if Chase gets wind that Elias is looking for him, he will have reassurances in place.

He knows where my parents live. He likely has eyes on them now. Men waiting outside my childhood home, waiting to go inside and kill them if I fuck up.

I’m traveling to Connecticut to see them for Christmas. I’ll have to figure out a way to sneak them out. I could rent a hotel room for them, maybe somewhere a couple towns over. I have enough money saved up.

I’d have to explainwhyI want them to go into hiding, but I’d rather do that than have them die.

I push my overactive thoughts aside as we enter a large dining room, lit only by a dim crystal chandelier above the long table. We sit at the end. Noah and Del on one side, me and Elias on the other with Noah’s father at the head. A server comes around to get our drink order, then disappears.

“Who is this?” The scary mafia boss asks, pointing his chin at me.

“My best friend. I told you she was coming, remember?” Noah says with a sigh.

She told me he’s not a fan of bringing ‘civilians’ into their world, but she basically named me her associate so he wouldn’t see me as a threat.

Noah’s father looks at me again and gives an approving nod.

His brown eyes slide to Elias, and they narrow.

“Elias Carter. Never in my life did I think I’d be serving QBM swine in my own home.”

Elias goes rigid beside me. I swear I canfeelthe anger radiating from him, boiling within and ready to blow.

I slip my hand under the table and find his knee, squeezing gently. He jerks slightly at my touch before his body relaxes, even if I’m the only one who notices.

“You can thank your daughter for that, Lenetti.”

Noah’s father takes a sip of his whiskey and turns his head to her. “Yes, what is my daughter up to?”

“Well,” Noah begins, gulping hard enough I can see her throat working. She’s anxious, but she would never admit it. “As you know, Lance and I are getting married.”

Elias and Noah’s father scoff at the same time.

“Oh, fuck off, the both of you,” Noah says. “It’s happening and when we’re married, our organizations will be connected. We should take advantage of that. We need to work together.”
