I lead her to the shower where I wash off my cum. I keep it quick, because after three orgasms, she’s barely able to keep her eyes open.

She was exhausted before, and I had every intention to let her rest after the earlier scare, but I lost all control when she showed interest in me, in my body, my wings…touching them and making my cock painfully hard. My wings being highly sensitive to her touch is another sign she’s my mate.

I dress her in the same sweats and t-shirt from before and lead her to her room.

“Wait. I want to sleep in your bed.”

I don’t argue because I can no longer deny her what she wants.

The moment I tuck her into my king-size bed, she falls asleep. I watch her for a few minutes and wonder what supernatural being wants to cause her harm. Why would they be after her?

The only answer that makes sense is me. If my potential fated mate is killed before we unite our souls, then I am as good as dead.

Evangeline is so fragile as most humans are. I’ll protect her, though. I just need to know what I’m up against. Maybe we can get some answers from her mother on Monday.

Iwake with a stretch and a yawn, realizing that was the best sleep I’ve had in centuries. I reach for my kitten, only to realize she’s not there, and the mattress is cold.

My heart begins racing, worried she has left me, or perhaps she was taken by the creature I sensed outside the barriers last night. Were they able to get through?

It’s not until I hear her hearty laughter coming from the kitchen that my anxious thoughts subside. Locheran’s voice follows, and an emotion I’ve never felt before rises within my body.

Jealousy.

I slip out of bed and march out to the kitchen where the two sit at the island.

“Whoa, buddy,” Locheran begins. “You’ve got murder on your face. Are we going demon hunting?”

Evangeline’s eyes widen, and her mouth forms a perfect ‘O’. Locheran’s words should have concerned her, but instead, she seems intrigued.

“No, wait,” Locheran says, his mouth twisting into a malicious grin. “I know what’s happening.”

“What?” Evangeline asks, her face twisting in confusion.

Locheran throws up his hands. “Look, Xanny. I’m just here to deliver a cat.”

That’s when I notice a black cat on my marble countertop eating wet food. It glances up at me and slow-blinks before resuming its meal.

“Sorry about her being on the countertop. I’ll wipe it down. She’s very picky about where she eats. I have to feed her like this at my apartment.”

Evangeline chews on her bottom lip, worried about my reaction. I suppose I still have a territorial mask on my face. I knew this would happen the moment I tasted her. The need to make her mine, to protect and defend her from other gargoyles, kicked in.

It will only get worse the more we give in to the bond.

Locheran knows this. He’s testing me, the asshole.

“Do not be sorry, Kitten. The cat can be on the counter.”

“Birdie. That’s her name.”

“Right. Birdie.”

I turn my attention to Locheran. “You should go.”

“Xander,” Evangeline gasps. “That wasn’t very nice. The commander and I were enjoying our breakfast and talking about our favorite zombie movies and TV shows.”

She places her palm on top of his knuckles, and I fist my hands at my side.

“You can stay,” she says to Locheran, who notices my building fury.
