“The driver will take you all back to the hotel safely; it’s your job to make sure he’s at the chapel on time.” I turned talking to Evan, who was already three sheets to the wind, as he motor-boated the stripper straddling his lap.
“Yeah, yeah, man I got this. Best man remember?” Best jackass was more like, but what the fuck ever, maybe if Damen didn’t make it to the chapel there would be no wedding. Then Veronica and her scheming ass would be shit out of luck at landing one of the Carter brothers.
“You should stay man.” Evan slurred as the dancer on his lap ground against him.
“I saw you strike out with that chubby skank over there, but these chicks are much more welcoming. Aren’t you ladies? You should at least get your money’s worth before you leave.” If Evan wasn’t my brother's best friend, he’d be dead right now for talking about Star like that.
“What the fuck do you mean get his money’s worth? Didn’t you arrange this? Evan?” Damen bounced his eyes back and forth between us demanding an answer. His face was starting to get that red tint to it that said he was pissed. Evan looked over at me with a plea in his eyes. This fucker actually wanted me to bail his ass out after he’s been nothing but a jackass to me. He’s lucky I love my brother.
“Yeah of course he arranged everything, chill bro. Just remember these are strippers not hookers Evan. You paid for them to dance not fuck.” I glared down at him; my fists clenched begging me to let them punch the shit out him, trying to make sure he understood me.
“Yeah man, I know that, but if one of them wants to come back to my hotel room for some fun I’m not going to turn that shit down either. Just because you couldn’t get the chubby chick to go home with you doesn’t mean the rest of us won’t get lucky.” His smarmy smile made me want to put my foot through his face, but instead I flipped him off.
“I’ll see you both tomorrow at the chapel; try not to get arrested before then.” I stalked off, knowing that if I stayed a moment longer Evan was going to find my foot up his ass. Getting outside I walked over to the driver that I hired for the night, giving him last minute instructions.
“No stops between here and the hotel, regardless of what that fuck nugget Evan tells you. Got me?” The driver nodded in understanding before I started walking down the strip. It was well after midnight, but this was Las Vegas, the city that never sleeps. I was pretty sure astronauts in space could still see the place with how bright it always was, lit up like a Christmas tree on steroids.
Chapter Five
Cassie
“Cassie?” Mack’s voice rang out from the doorway to the dressing room.
“Yeah, I’m back here.” I called back.
“You okay?” There was genuine concern in his eyes when he came around the corner of the row of lockers. Mack was a good guy, he was too much of a gentleman to be working at a strip club, but enough of a badass to keep the assholes in line. He reminded me of a giant teddy bear, one that just wants to be hugged.
“I’ll survive, look thanks for keeping him from coming back here. He was a little intense, you know what I mean.” Nodding Mack smirked like he knew something I didn’t.
“Anyway, I’m going to head out; my shift was almost over anyway. Hopefully Marvin won’t lose his shit because I’m ditching a few minutes early.” My luck Marvin would have kittens; I just hoped he didn’t fire me.
“I think Marvin is still cleaning his ass from where he shit himself back there.” Mack chuckled and I couldn’t help joining him. Never in the entire time I’d worked at Jiggles & Giggles had I seen Marvin scared shitless like I did when Xander faced off with him.
“You might be right; I’ve never seen him scared like that. And dude, where were you? I’m surprised he’s not reaming your ass for not ‘controlling’ the customers.” Mack looked a little guilty as he shuffled his feet a little.
“I was distracted by...things.” Giving me a knowing smirk, which told me he had no plans to save our boss from Xander.
“Uh huh, distracted was it. Well, I’m going to head out, my feet are killing me, and the babysitter will be happy to go home a little early tonight. Later Mack, thanks again for having my back.” Walking towards the back exit, where the dancers parked to avoid clients, Mack followed closely behind.
“Okay, tell Andi I said hi. How’s she doing in school?” Mack was one of the few people who worked with me that knew about my niece. He’d met her by accident when he ran into us while we were out shopping for school clothes for her before starting kindergarten.
“She’s great, I’ll tell her in the morning over breakfast. She’ll be so happy to hear you said hello, she calls you her BFG.” My whole face smiles thinking of her as Mack looks at me quizzically.
“Big Friendly Giant.” Mack chuckles shaking his head.
“I’ll take that title, to her I’m sure I am a giant, she’s so tiny. You let me know if I need to straightenout any of those boys at that school.” Laughing, I shook my head at him.
“Oh my god Mack she’s so smart, her teacher asked to have her tested for the gifted program.” Mack smiled back at me as he pushed the back door open for me.
“Of course, she’s smart, look at her auntie. How can she not be smart?” Was he kidding? If I was smart, I wouldn’t be a thief, and I sure as hell wouldn’t be a stripper. Hell, if I was smart my goals would have been bigger than showgirl in Vegas. Giving Mack a wane smile, I squeeze past him out the door.
“I’ll watch ‘til you get to your car, one of the other dancers said some vagrant was hanging out there yesterday.” I arched an eyebrow at him questioningly, because I hadn’t heard anything about a vagrant from anyone.
Xander’s wallet sans all the cash, a couple hundred bucks, was burning a hole in my pocket. I was planning on tossing it in the dumpster out back, but with Mack watching there was no way. Keeping it was dangerous, if I was caught with it, I could go to jail, Andi would go into foster care. Maybe I could toss it somewhere along my route home.
“Thanks Mack, for everything.” I gave him my sweetest smile waving as I started my car, my old Toyota Camry wheezed and sputtered before it settled. It was a total piece of shit, but it got me from point A to point B, so I gave it a little pat of approval before heading out.
No more than two minutes down the road towards our epically tiny one-bedroom apartment my phone rings. Figuring it’s Marvin about to chew my ass out I start to ignore it, he can yell at me later. When it starts to ring a second time, I sneak a peek at the screen while I’m stopped at a red light. It’s the sitter, Maria, something must be wrong with Andi. Pulling over to the shoulder, I answer.
