“We’ll be there in fifteen.” Hanging up with Mario, I immediately dial Cassie.
“Xander, any news?” Her voice filled with hope.
“I need you dressed and ready to go in five minutes. I’m picking you up to take you somewhere. I’ll explain once I pick you up.” Before she can start asking me a million questions, I click the phone off. She will be pissed off when I get there, but I don’t have time to explain it all to her over the phone either.
When I pull up to her apartment building, she’s standing at the curb. I’ve barely stopped before she’s hopping into the passenger seat snapping her seat belt on. What I’m about to tell her isn’t going to be easy for her to digest. My plans for her are out the window, and what bothers me the most isn’t the fact that I’m not going to get my dick wet. What bothers me the most is this might break Cassie, which is how I know I’m well and truly fucked when it comes to her.
Chapter Eleven
Cassie
“What the fuck are you talking about Xander? You said you’d get her back, you promised me.” I can’t even process what he just told me, it can’t be true, there’s no way.
“Unfortunately, it’s true, Mario Mallozzi is Andi’s father. He’s been looking for her since your sister took off. I’m so sorry Cassie.” He reaches over taking my hand and giving it a squeeze.
“But she’s mine, he can’t have her. I have court documents that state she’s mine, he can’t have her. Xander you have to do something, anything.” I can feel the edges of hysteria creeping in on me; I have to blink back tears. This is not the time for losing it though. I need a level head to deal with this shit.
“He’s agreed to let you see her, but that’s all I can do for now. Mario was very clear on the phone that he will not give her up. Court orders mean shit to guys like Mario.” Xander grips the steering wheel so tight his knuckles start to turn white.
“Your sister is only alive because she’s Andi’s mother, you don’t cross a guy like Mario. Whatever you do, don't piss him off.” His eyes darted to me, pleading.
I’m silent for the rest of the ride to Mario’s, I’m contemplating how hard it might be to grab Andi and make a run for it. If what Xander says is true I wouldn’t make it to the front door before I had a bullet through my head. I want to strangle my sister for her stupidity. How could she get involved with a guy like Mario? What was she thinking?
When we pull up to the valet parking at one of the more prestigious casinos of Vegas, I look over at Xander questioningly. He simply shrugs as the valet opens my door and helps me out. Xander tosses the young kid his keys and reaches for my hand. Taking it, I realize how quickly this man has become my anchor in this sea of chaos I’m swimming through.
Xander leads me through the casino floor until we reach a small two-person elevator along the back wall. There’s a scary big beefy guy standing beside it, his black eyes rake over me appreciatively. I resist the urge to move closer to Xander. Instead, I meet his gaze head on, because I refuse to let these guys intimidate me, even if they are mob and could kill me without a second thought.
“He’s waiting for you, both of you.” Scary dude tells Xander before roving his eyes over me again.
“I saw you dance once, the things you can do up on that pole.” He puts his fingers together kissing them before flinging them outward. Xander pulls me closer, growling at Scary.
“Thanks, I think.” Because what do you say to a guy who just admitted to watching you strip and likes what you do with the stripper pole. Xander shoves me into the elevator ahead of him, but not before I see the shit eating grin on scary dudes’ face. He was trying to provoke Xander. Well mission accomplished buddy, he’s officially pissed.
There are no numbers on the console, just an emergency phone, but the elevator starts to move up as soon as the doors shut. I can’t help the giggle that bubbles out of me.
“What’s so fucking funny?” Xander asks, anger lacing his voice.
“You fell for that shit. Hook. Line. And sinker. He was trying to get a reaction out of you, and you walked right into it.” My laughter instantly faded as I thought about the ramifications of that guy knowing where I work.
“Figure it out, did you? Yeah, not so fucking funny now is it. Mario has been having you watched. That wasn’t him fucking with me, that was a message. They know where to find you.” Xander looks like he might have a coronary he’s so pissed.
Before he can say anything else, the elevator comes to a stop. The doors open to a beautiful marble tiled entryway. There’s a chandelier hanging from the ceiling casting rainbows across the floor. We’re greeted by two more scary guys who lead us further into the penthouse. Stepping into what looks like the living room, I can’t help but gape.
There are floor to ceiling windows that span the whole area that give a view of the entirety of Vegas. The living room is filled with expensive looking furniture, plush leather couches, and a glass top coffee table. I frown at it, this isn’t safe for Andi. All right being the daughter of a mob boss isn’t safe, but Andi still has balance issues when she has a growth spurt. She could fall and cut her head open.
“That needs to go.” I say spinning around to the two goons standing in the doorway while pointing at the coffee table. They both look at me like I’ve lost my mind.
“Uh Cassie, what are you doing? We talked about not pissing people off when you meet them.” Xander says as he tries to reach for me.
“Yeah, well that’s not safe for Andi, it needs to go. If these assholes are going to keep my baby, then they should be taking every precaution to make sure her environment is safe.” The hysteria is starting to creep back in. I know I should keep my mouth shut, but I can’t stop myself.
“You heard the lady, remove the table.” A smooth voice with a slight Italian accent calls out from the other side of the room. Turning I see a very attractive man enter the room, he’s wearing a tailored three-piece suit that’s probably worth more than I make in a year. There’s this aura of power that seems to emanate from him. When he smiles at me and motions for me to sit, I suddenly feel like his prey. Xander clears his throat behind, and the man's focus shifts over to him.
“Ah Xander, my friend. It’s good to see you again.” The man walks over to Xander, shaking his hand in greeting. I narrowed my eyes at Xander, he didn’t tell me he knew him, he didn’t tell me they were friends.
“Oh, don’t be mad at him sweet Cassie, we’ve only met a handful of times. We are not what you would call ‘besties’, more like acquaintances. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Mario Vito, the father of your niece; it's so good to finally meet you face to face.” Mario reaches out his hand to me and when I take it, he pulls me in, hugging me. I’m being hugged by a mob boss, lovely, just what I always wanted.
“It’s nice to meet you. Where’s Andi?” I’m not here for pleasantries, I’m here for my niece.
