“I’m just watching you spend time with my babies. Enjoying the show,” I smile sweetly at my babies.

Walking into the kitchen I kiss both Kylen and Rylen on the top of their heads. Turning I wrap my arms around Troy from the back kissing him between his shoulder blades.

“We’ve got a lot to talk about and cover, starting with Mini Lucky one and two,” Troy turns in my arms and kisses me on the forehead.

I drop my head to his chest sighing, “How about you ask questions and I answer them? To be honest I don’t even know where to start to tell you everything.”

“Like I said let’s start with the babies,” Troy smiles squeezing me before turning back to the stove.

I go to the cabinet and grab the babies’ bottles to make them one.

“To answer your question to them. Yes, they can have eggs but it’s usually after a bottle. Second, their names are Kylen and Rylen, and they will be seven months old in just a couple of weeks. Thankful they were only three and a half weeks early and both strong as hell. Now they are on the road to healthy happy babies.”

“I think it’s crazy they each have one of your bright green eyes. You know I need to know about their dad and who that asshole was last night,” Troy growls looking at the babies in complete wonder.

“Well, I can answer both those questions at once because they are one and the same,” I tell him like it’s no big deal.

“Lucky, your vagueness isn’t winning you any favors here,” Troy growls leaning on the counter with his hands on either side of me.

I drop my eyes not wanting to have this conversation again so soon. Troy lifts my chin so tenderly with his knuckle, so I have no choice but to look at him.

“Let’s give the babies their bottle and make plates and then I’ll tell you everything and answer any questions you could have,” I tell him.

“Okay, I understand we have to take care of the babies first. I need to have the conversation to know that you and they are safe and taken care of,” he tells me kissing me on the forehead and going back to the stove.

We get the babies settled and sit down at the table before I’m really ready. I take a bite of my waffle waiting on him. We watch each other for what seems like hours when Troy has enough of waiting.

“Talk woman. Who the fuck was that asshole and why was he attacking you outside your job?”

Taking a drink of my juice to buy me time. “He is my supposed husband.”

“Supposed? What does that mean?”

“You remember everything I told you about my dad and what he was doing with my older sisters?”

“Yeah. Marrying them off to older rich men to support the family?” he asks.

I nod slowly hoping he’ll figure out where this is going without me having to spell it out. He just raises one eyebrow and waits. Sighing I lean back in my chair.

“The night before my eighteenth birthday when I was coming down the stairs to come to meet you my family ambushed me. We were supposed to celebrate my birthday the next night but no the man that was to be my husband didn’t want to wait anymore. He was just there and before I could so much as grab a change of clothes, he whisked me away from everything I knew to his home. He monitored all of my conversations I wasn’t allowed out of the house without him with me.” I tell him trying to hold back the tears.

“That’s why you didn’t come? They forced you to leave?” he questions.

“Yes. I’m almost one-hundred percent sure that they did it the night before my birthday so I was still a minor and couldn’t say no. That somehow, they knew what was going on between us. We got to his home, and nothing was like I thought life would be. He was rough, abusive, and nasty to deal with. When I found out I was pregnant he wanted nothing to do with me. One day after I got pregnant, I had a dizzy spell, fell on our front steps, and ended up in the hospital. The nurses kept asking me about insurance and this or that. I kept telling them that I had no idea, but my husband was on his way,” I finish, looking at my hands as the embarrassment of what happened that night washes over me.

Troy comes over to me, picks me up and sits with me in his lap, “What happened sweetheart? It had to be bad for you to be hiding from me.”

“When he showed up, he told the nurse that I was lying about being his wife. That I was his niece that was just staying with him for a while. I felt as if I had been kicked in the teeth. Come to find out he was really married to someone else and was keeping me on the side. The wedding and everything we had was all a sham to win favors with my father. Why? I still haven’t figured out.”

“That mother fucker, if I ever get my hands on him, I’ll fucking end him,” Troy growls.

“Hey, watch your mouth in front of the babies. I don’t want their first words to be fuck or damn,” I scold him.

“My dear, I’m a soldier. We curse but I’ll do my best to not make it so bad around the babies.”

“On the way back from the hospital he yelled, screamed, and promised after the babies were born I would pay for every grievance I racked up while pregnant. I couldn’t bring babies into this life with this asshole and now that I knew I wasn’t legally married to him I started planning my escape. Using the fact that I had dizzy spells and some of the nurses at the hospital I was able to get free. I originally came here thinking I might get help from my family. Only to fucking find out they are long gone, and I have no idea where they went. I was still early pregnant and couldn’t handle finding anywhere else to go. I settled here and have been here since,” I finish not having the nerve to look him in the face.

“Hey, eyes up,” Troy murmurs softly. “First, you have nothing to be ashamed of. You were young and had no idea that people could ever do something like that. Second, you got out. You didn’t stay in a situation just because it’s all you knew, you got out and got your babies out. Third, you do not ever have to worry about that asshole again. I called a friend I still have on the police force to take your statement so we can file a restraining order. Then you have exactly five days to plan our wedding. I have to go back to my unit in exactly seven,” Troy says never wavering.
