I put my arms around his waist and sink into his arms. I let my head rest on his chest, right below his heart. I can feel the thumpity-thump rhythm that settles me.
I’m content. I’m completely happy in this moment. Please let me stay here forever.
Chapter Fourteen
Hawk
She’s the first woman I’ve ever wanted to let in. So, why do I feel like there’s so much she’s not telling me? -Hawk
I hold her in my arms, feeling her softness blend with my hardness. I want to whisper to her that she can tell me anything, that I know about her past. I know about her family. I know about the danger that probably awaits her in Georgia.
Since Chip first found that information, I’ve done more digging about her family. My Maggie is the rebel of her family. And her family is so rigid that I can only imagine how they treat their rebels.
I spoke with Deadeye about them yesterday. I know my Maggie is running from something and if I had to guess, I would say it’s the rigid confines of her mafia-related family. He merely said he was there for my woman as well as me.
There are tears in her eyes as she looks up at me from her place nestled in my chest. “You’ll protect me, Hawk? You and all these men?” Her voice is almost disbelieving.
I glance around at the leather-clad hardened men that stand in small groups, talking and laughing. One of the members lifts his giggling two-year-old up in his arms and swings her around. Another plays peek-a-boo with a baby.
“Yeah, baby, we’ll protect you no matter what.”
Tell me, Maggie. Tell me about your family. Tell me what you’re afraid of.
She lets out a long breath and then gives me a broad, fake smile. “I’m sure there’s nothing to be afraid of. I’m just being silly.” She waves off the seriousness of the conversation. “I have to say you have given me exactly what I was looking for. I’m really beginning to understand what being in an MC is about. And how soft it’s members can be.”
I snort. “Don’t get the wrong impression, princess. These men are only soft for their families. Outsiders are treated differently. We can be tough when we need to be.”
She reaches up and puts her hand on my bicep. The muscle instantly hardens in response. “Oh, I know y’all can be tough. I’ve got no illusions about that.” She runs her hand over my chin stubble. “But I can’t wait to write a hero just like you. Tough for so many others, but not for his woman.”
I pull her close to me. “I’m still hard for you in some places.” I rub my hardness against her, and she gives a small moan.
She bites down on her lower lip and blushes bright red. “Not here, Hawk. This is a family place.” She slaps my arm playfully. “But as soon as we leave, yes.”
I tilt my head back and roar with laughter. My Maggie May. So proper, yet so not.
We finally let each other go and I watch her mingle for a while, talking to the other wives and girlfriends. There’s something so natural about her being here. Something so right.
Grizz, the owner of the Black Crown, sidles up to me as I watch my girl.
“Claimed your woman, did you?” he asks gruffly. He takes a long drag of his cigarette as I turn to see him watching me with a wise look on his weathered face.
“I did, Wolf,” I say, using his old club moniker, “and she’s somethin’.”
He runs a wrinkled hand down his full beard and sends me a wink. “Nothin’ better than a good woman. And family. Family is what makes it all worth it.”
He pats me on the shoulder before he walks away. Family is what makes everything worth it. Every battle, every struggle, all of it.
The tinkle of Maggie’s laugh rings out and I smile.I want her to be a part of that family. I want her to trust me and let me in. I’ll take care of you, sweetheart. I’ll always take care of you.
Chapter Fifteen
Maggie
Is this what love feels like? Is this what people write songs about? Because now I totally get it. -Maggie
“What happened then?” I ask softly.
Hawk continues to stroke my arm and his soft, growly voice continues with his story. “I came home. I was only wounded in the leg, but it was enough to put me out of the military. Now, that leg only really hurts when the weather is bad, but damn if it didn’t keep me from finishing out my career.” I can hear the pain in his voice, and I reach over to run my finger along his bearded jaw.
