His expression turned surprisingly serious as his hands shifted to my waist. “This means forever, Sami. And I don’t want…” He trailed off, shaking his head.
Suddenly concerned, I leaned forward. “What don’t you want?”
“I don’t want a new home.” His dark eyes met mine. “I don’t want a mortgage. I wantyou. I want to make a home with you. I want to keep my baby aloe on your windowsill and help you plant your garden beds. I want to build a workshop in your backyard to create everything I can to make our lives more comfortable. You are everything I need, everything I want. I might have married you for a mortgage, but I didn’t want you to think that’s still what I wanted.”
Oh, Tarkhan. My heart, which was already close to melting, turned into a big puddle of goo.
“Deal,” I whispered, brushing a kiss over his nose. “But never say never. One day, we’re going to need more space around here. Of course, instead of a new house, you can start planning an addition for the house, for when the foster kids start showing up.”
He blinked. And when his eyes opened again, I saw that spark of green deep within them, as well as hope and anticipation. His lips curled, his tusks gleaming, and I knew he was as happy as I was.
Then with a sudden movement, he tightened his hold on me and rolled to the side of the bed, taking me with him.
“What are you doing?” I shrieked as he lifted me over his shoulder.
“Quiet, you,” he commanded, smacking my ass lightly. “I’ve spent weeks dreaming of washing my wife’s hair,” he explained, heading toward the bathroom. “So I’m going to do it tonight.”
“Oh, yeah?” I asked as he lowered me, sliding me along his body as he reached in to turn on the shower. “You’re going to wash your wife’s hair?”
“No,” he growled, leaning closer, a wicked glint in his eyes. “I’m going to bathe myMate. And then I’m going to get her very dirty all over again. I hope you’re not planning on sleeping tonight, dkaar.”
Oh my.
Smiling in anticipation, I slid my arms around his neck. “I can’t wait,Mate.”
Chapter Fifteen
Tarkhan
At two p.m. on Monday,Sami and I showed up at the small office Harper used on Main Street. It wasn’t fancy—just a subdivided section of a larger space—and the other signs on the doors said her neighbors were a start-up chocolatier and an accountant who saw clients two days a week.
It probably wasn’t what Montgomery was used to…hell, if Harper came from that same world, it probably wasn’t what she was used to either. But it was perfect for Eastshore.
I paused, holding the door open for Sami. “You ready?” I murmured.
Her small hand squeezed mine. “As ready as I’ll ever be. You sure you’re willing to be here with me?”
I snorted. “How could you ask that? You’re not only the woman I love, Sami, you’re mywife. And you’re not only my wife, but you’re my Mate. Do you know what that means?”
When she grinned, I knew she was thinking about last night. And this morning. And the shower we’d taken before noon. “I’m beginning to understand.”
Montgomery could wait; this was more important.
So I stopped and turned her toward the wall, so I could splay my palms against the ugly wallpaper on either side of her shoulders and lean closer to her.
“It means,Mate, that thiswillwork. You and me? We have a future together. That’s no longer in question.” I loved the way her lips curled softly as her gaze dropped to my lips. “Wewillspend our lives together, and Montgomery can’t stop that.” I leaned closer to nuzzle her temple, inhaling her sweet scent. “And if you keep looking at me like that, I’m going to forget about this meeting, throw you over my shoulder, and take you back home.”
Her breathing had stuttered, her eyes going wide. I could smell her faint arousal, the most delicious scent in the world. “That sounds…primitive, doesn’t it?”
“My ancestors didn’t let things like society get in the way. We saw a female we wanted, the one we knew was ours, and we carried her off to our cave to claim her until ourKteerwas satisfied.”
“And byclaimyou mean…?” she teased.
“Pleasuring her,” I whispered, my lips against her hair. “Fucking her. Making her scream in ecstasy.”
The sharp sweet spike of her arousal told me she was remembering last night as well.
“Oh. Well.” She shifted her weight against the wall. “That sounds…lovely. And you think we could do that instead of meeting with Pierce?”
