After a small memorial service, Easton and Brett, stay in Lapeer to help the coyotes tie up all the loose ends they need to take care of before they move to the city. Brett has his own things to take care of, packing up his apartment and selling his garage, and Easton is the perfect person to help keep them all safe. It’ll be good for him to have something else to focus on right now in the wake of losing his brother.
I wish I could give Matthew and Elise a break too, as Preston was their only child and they are devastated, but I need them to continue their jobs. With all the new members, we’re more desperate than ever to get the housing taken care of, and I would seriously fall apart without Elise helping me run things.
It’s hectic, and we’re all grieving, but everyone chips in to get us organized and settled. It’s on the sixth day home that I’m forced to slow down. I’m just wrapping up an interview with a potential accountant when Skylar knocks on the office door. “Come on in, sweetheart.”
I’m exhausted, and I’ve had a headache for a solid day and a half now, but when my mate enters the office, I find a second—or fiftieth—wind. It’s not even her omega powers. It’s just her. She lights up my world. We’ve both been so busy this week that we’ve hardly gotten to spend any time alone together, but my love for her grows every day. It’s been two weeks since she stumbled into my life, and I’ve already forgotten what it was like without her. She’s my everything.
Both the woman I was interviewing and I stand to greet Skylar. I hold my hand out, and she comes to me with a soft smile. “Sorry to interrupt,” she says. She leans in to kiss my cheek, but I turn my head and meet her lips with mine instead.
“It’s not a problem. We just finished.”
After a quick introduction, I shake the woman’s hand again and open the office door for her. “It was good to meet you, Lark. I’ll let you know by the end of the week.”
Once she’s gone, I close the door and pull Skylar into my arms. I give her a deep kiss, then drag her to my desk chair and pull her down onto my lap. She happily settles on my thigh. “Deer shifter?” she asks, referring to the woman who was just in my office.
I nod. “It was a surprise to me too, but she’s a very bright woman with a lot of experience and a witty sense of humor.”
Skylar smiles at that. “You like her.”
“I do. I think she’d be a good fit for the pack.”
“Do you think she could handle being a prey shifter in a pack full of predators?”
I take a moment to think about it, and then let out a sigh. “It’s hard to say. She did all right with me, but always being surrounded by an entire pack is a different story. Plus, she’s got a mate and two children who would come with her.”
“Well, if she’s the best candidate you’ve interviewed, then maybe we should have the whole family come over for a pack dinner. They can spend some time in a group setting and see if it’s something they want.”
I squeeze Skylar in a light hug and press a kiss to her temple. “That’s a good idea. I’ll have Elise set it up.”
I reach for my phone, but Skylar stops me. “Tomorrow.” She combs her fingers through my hair. “You have other plans this evening.”
I close my eyes and tip my head back, groaning at the light scrape of her nails on my scalp. Her touch is a balm to my frayed nerves. “What plans?” Exhaustion plagues my voice. “I didn’t see anything on my schedule.”
“I know. I’m the one who cleared it.” The smile in her tone makes me open my eyes. She rakes her hand through my hair again while her gaze roams over my face. Her smile softens, and she smooths her thumb beneath my eyes, as if trying to wipe away the dark circles beneath them. “You need a night off.”
I pull in a deep breath through my nose and let it out in a woosh. Skylar moves her hand from my eyes to cup my cheek. I lean into it for a moment before grabbing it, kissing it, then holding it against my chest. “I want that, but Nora came through with the building permits, and Sean got keys to the apartments this afternoon. He’ll be back any minute. We need to go through and figure out exactly what needs to be done to get the first floor move-in ready so we can start the renovations first thing in the morning.”
Skylar gives me another soft smile that has me melting on the inside. If I ever wondered what love looks like, I don’t anymore.Skylar’s face says it all. “Sean’s already back. I sent him over to the apartments with Matthew and Bree. They’ll take care of it. You have something more important to do tonight.”
Curious now, I wait for her to explain. She surprises me with a kiss, but pulls back before I can deepen it, and she grins at me with a playful twinkle in her eyes. “You promised me a date.”
A date? That was the last thing I expected her to say. I’m stunned enough that Skylar laughs at whatever look of surprise is on my face. My shock quickly turns to pleasure, and I squeeze her tightly again, pulling her in even closer. When I find my voice, my words come out low and husky. “I did promise you a date. I promised you all the dates.”
Skylar purses her lips and crinkles her nose as she holds back a smile, but her joy is spilling from her eyes. “It’s time to pay up, Alpha.” Her fingers find my hair again, and she steals another kiss before she moves her lips to my ear and murmurs, “I already told the pack that you’re all mine tonight. They promised not to bother us unless it’s life or death.”
Heat flares through me from head to toe before shooting straight to my groin, where Skylar is currently snuggled on my lap with all of her weight pressing into me. It takes half a second for my jeans to grow uncomfortably tight.
I attack her mouth, claiming her lips the way she claimed me for the night. Skylar lets me maul her for a moment before pressing her hand against my chest and leaning back. She’s laughing, but her cheeks are flushed, and her lips are swollen from my assault on them. She looks so sexy I could burst right here and now. I dive toward her again, needing more, but she blocks me, pressing a finger against my lips to hold me back. “I want a date, Wulf Winters. Not a makeout session in your office.”
I dart my head to the side, circumventing her finger and finding warm, smooth skin. “What did you have in mind?” I ask as I devour her neck.
Skylar gasps, and instead of pushing me back, leans her head to the side, giving me better access to her delicate flesh. I lick and kiss and suck with a need I’ve never felt before, but I’m careful not to leave any marks. As much as I want the world to see that she’s mine, I don’t think she’d appreciate going on her first date covered in hickeys.
Skylar shivers. “I was thinking we should start small,” she says, panting between words. “Dinner and a movie?”
“Sounds perfect.”
We keep dinner simple, and I take her to the best burger joint in the city. She’s thrilled with the moderately sketchy hole-in-the-wall, explaining that Victor was a snob and never took her anywhere that was less than five stars. She also confesses that she was never allowed to have dessert and has never had a milkshake. It’s a problem I immediately rectify.
