Ruth’s hand went to her hip. “Mega, stop it! It’s a school dance for Christ’s sake. It will be fully chaperoned.” She waved me off like I had no stake in this conversation.

“Daddy, Kellie is going with Ryne’s best friend, Payton. I don’t want to be a third wheel,” Maggie whined. “It’s just a dance.”

There was no way my brother from another mother and Ruth’s blood brother was alright with some lil nigglet taking my niece on a date. I didn’t care that it was to a chaperoned dance. I used to smash girls at chaperoned dances, so it being chaperoned meant nothing to me.

“Let’s go see if you have something in your closet or if we need to go shopping.” Ruth and Maggie rushed out of the room like I wasn’t here contemplating on whether this little boy was going to have a sudden accident the day before the dance.

I wouldn’t kill him. I try not to do that anymore, but a broken leg would build character. Both of them had me messed up. I reached into the bedside table drawer to pull out my bat phone. Retired associates of Christianson Enterprises kept their bat phones in cases of emergency. This felt like one. I pulled up the contact I needed.

Me:

Hey, what’s up? I need you to pull a file on someone.

TB:

Okay, give me the name and anything else you have.

Yeah, Taelyn would get this information fast as hell. She was currently the Vice President of Information Technology at Christianson Enterprises. Mauri retired a few years ago but was still available for special assignments like we all were.

Me:

His name is Ryne Armen. Age is 12 or 13. He attends Coreland Middle.

The little dots started to move on the screen. I turned on the television as I waited for her to respond. She must have been typing an essay or something.

TB:

ML, I know you’re not about to have me looking up a 12 or 13 year old. What the hell did he do!

Me:

He asked my daughter to be his date to a dance. I need to make sure him and his people aren’t traffickers or anything.

That was a real possibility. When it came to my children, I didn’t put anything past anyone. The dots on the screen started to move.

TB:

She’ll pull the information for you and have it to you by the morning. – DC.

See, that right there was why Draco would always be my dude! Over the years, our families had grown tighter. Draco and Taelyn had two sets of twins. Their youngest set, Trelyn and Dralyn, were identical while his first set, Cartrell and Zoie Lynn, were fraternal. Yeah, we were going to see how this played out after I got this information.

A Couple Days Later. . .

“Mr. Gorrom, I’m extremely pleased that you heeded my advice and you were able to see the benefit of doing by the increase in your bottom line. Why make high six figures when you could make high seven with a few adjustments?”

I was in my office with a client that I consulted with in my position at Christianson Enterprises. I made great money in my position. I made better money when I was in the disposal department, but forced retirement knocked me out of that position. I spoke with Mr. Gorrom for a few more minutes before I disconnected the video call.

I loosened my tie and got up from my seat. It was my last call of the day, so it was time for me to get the hell out of this suit. I wore a full suit, although I was virtual, because I walked around my office during calls when I brainstormed. The client could see me because of the camera layout.

When I opened the door to my office, there stood a very upset Ruth.Ah, hell.I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her. “What’s going on, beautiful wife of mine?”

When I tried to kiss her lips, she turned her head. “Mega, did you somehow get Ryne’s parents’ information and call them to invite them to dinner to talk about our children’s date? Is that what you did?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “It sounds like you know what I did, so why the questions?” I pecked her lips, although I knew she didn’t want me to. I pivoted on my heels to head to our bedroom.

“Mega, that was completely uncalled for. It’s a school dance.” I felt her on my heels. “Ryne said something to Maggie about it, and she is upset. Why would you do that?”

I walked into our walk-in closet to strip. “Ruth, it’s not like I said that she couldn’t go. I mean, you made that decision without me.” I side-eyed her. “While you’re excited about our twelve-year-old daughter going on a date with a lil nigglet, I want to make sure that she’s not going with the son of serial killers or a lil demon himself. No one wanted to tell me that his ass was in eighth grade and thirteen.”
