Southern Hearts& Signed Kisses . . .

I can’t believe I’m in Kami’s hotel suite, and she just did my daughter and niece’s hair.I couldn’t remember how the conversation even came up about her doing the girls’ hair. She wasn’t a hairstylist, but I saw a post on TikTok where she straightened one of her friend’s hair, and I commented.Oh, I remember! She responded and said she could do mine at a book event. I took that offer and put it in my pocket. I thought the girls’ hair would be cute straightened, so I used the offer for them.

“Mommy, I love it!” Maggie was in the mirror moving her hair side to side. I kept her hair in its natural state. She woremainly twist outs, braids, and ponytails. Seeing that her hair was down her back was a little bit of a shock. “It’s long like yours when it’s straightened, Mommy. Oh, we about to step on heads, Kellie.”

Kellie’s hair was just as long. “And you know it, best friend. Period! Thank you, Miss Kami.”

“You babies welcome. Y’all are so beautiful,” she complimented as she put up her things. “Make sure y’all send me pictures. Let me wrap y’all hair so it doesn’t sweat out.”

I put my finger up. “Oh, I brought cute head wraps to go over the scarves that match with their outfits for today.” I’d thought of everything. The book signing event started at eleven and ended at two. Coreland was only about an hour and a half from the venue.

“Miss Kami, can we help you at your table today?” Kellie asked.

She smiled and glanced my way. I gave Kami a nod to let her know that was fine if she wanted them to help. “Of course, I would love the help. Chile, I came here alone, so I need the help.”

After they had their hair wrapped and head wraps on, they started to help her pack preorders. We were here at seven this morning for her to straighten their hair. I washed their hair last night. Mega asked so many questions that I had to send him to Ned’s house.

The authors had to be there no later than ten to set up. We made it there right at ten. I wasn’t sure how Kami thought she was going to finish these preorders in time without help. She did have some already packed, so that was a plus.

The event was amazing. I preordered from all my favorite authors. Mega was not happy about the $2,300 credit card bill, but he paid it. At the event, between me and the girls’ purchases, I spent another $700. That was good.

The girls did a great job helping Kami. I was extremely proud of them. We left by two thirty to make it home.

“Let me see y’all hair.”Mega was on us as soon as we walked through the door.

I put my hand up. “You’ll see it once they are dressed and ready for the dance. Shan is on her way soon from the restaurant.”

Shan was not as much of a reader as I was, so she opted to teach two pole classes this morning and work in the restaurant this afternoon. Over the years, I had told her that she didn’t have to work at the restaurant as a manager, but she always told me to shut up. She eventually told me that it was her way to get a break from Ned and the kids when they got on her nerves and make money at the same time when she wasn’t teaching pole classes.

Mega was in the den with the boys, watching wrestling. He glared at me. “You said the same thing when I asked you about their dresses, Ruth. You know if they come out here in something me or Ned doesn’t approve of, their asses are changing.”

“Megatron, I’m not going to do this with you, and you’re not going to do this with me. Sit there and watch wrestling with your sons.” I waved him off. “Let’s go, girls. Shan and Shanae should be here soon to help get you ready.

I heard Mega’s laughter as we walked away. “Alright, Ruth. Play with it. I haven’t nutted up in a while.”

Was I concerned about him nutting up? Not really. Did I think that he would nut up? Absolutely. That man would nut upif I had them in a long dress. He would fuss about the ankle visibility.

Shan and Shanae arrived at 5:15. Shanae was here to do their age-appropriate makeup. That was her thing and what she wanted to do for a living. Coreland High School had a vocational program, so she opted to get her esthetician certification. I loved that she wanted to focus on the health of the skin before the makeup even came into play. Whenever she called me to practice her facial or makeup skills, I was always available.

The dance started at seven, and the girls were ready by six fifteen. Shan and I stood there in awe of the beauty of our daughters. “How do you feel, girls?”

“Mommy, I love it,” Maggie admitted. She and Kellie couldn’t stop looking at themselves in the mirror. It was the cutest thing.

Kellie peeked over her shoulder at her mom and me. “Yeah, Auntie. Mama, I look just like you.”

“Make sure you say that in front of your daddy. He’s going to hate to hear you say that.” You could not tell Ned that all the kids didn’t look like him. It didn’t matter that Corleone and Shanae were not his biological children. He claimed that the more the kids were around him, Big G saw fit to alter their features to match his.

Mama Goldie walked into the room and stopped right over the threshold. “Look at my babies. Y’all hair! Oh my God, y’all daddies are going to show their entire asses.”

“Mama Goldie!” Shan burst into laughter. “Why you gonna scare them like that?”

Maggie’s face became etched with concern. “Mommy, you think Daddy won’t like it?”

“Baby, he will, but your daddy is touched in the head. Seeing you like this will force him to realize that you are really growing up,” I told her. “We got your back though.”

When I asked Mama Goldie if the boys were here yet, she smiled. “They are and so is that hot ass girl. She say something fresh, I’m going to punch her in her titty. Let’s see how hot in the ass she is for another woman’s husband with a caved in titty.”

What do you say to that? I knew she was serious, so I wasn’t going to say anything. I would admit that Samuel was fine as hell for his age. I’d admit it to myself that is.
