“Just get to bed,” he snaps.I know better than to poke the beast, so comply for now.

Dion paces angrily again like some caged animal looking for escape in every corner and finding none when a knock sounds on the door. His head snaps in its direction, and he moves toward the door, pulling it open sharply.“What!”he growls.

“Sorry to disturb you, Alpha,” I hear Tara’s shaky voice.

“Sorry, Tara, I didn’t expect you,” he tells her.

“Kyrio sent me; there are rogues at the borders.”

He glances back at me.

“I’ll be right there,” he says, shutting the door.Without a word, he stalks over to me, reaching for a set of cuffs.I move quickly, but not quick enough before he clamps it on my ankle.

“I don’t trust you, until I know you didn’t sabotage your shift deliberately. You don’t move without a guard.”He jingles the cuffs as he clamps them on the bed. Before I can even protest, he is gone, the door closing behind him.

Chapter 11

She never shifted. She should have shifted but nothing, not even a hint that she was near shifting besides her sudden heat, which died almost immediately after midnight when her wolf should have awoken.

Tara remains quiet, and I know she is dying to know what’s wrong. After a few tense minutes, she finally finds the courage to speak.“What color is her wolf?I bet she has a beautiful wolf,” Tara babbles excitedly. To them, Emery is a shiny new toy.She can do no wrong in my pack’s eyes.Maybe they see in her what they wish for in themselves.

Emery comes off as confident, sure of herself.Something they aren’t.They don’t see the side of Emery I do, the scared little girl living in a woman’s body.My world is as new to her as the outside world since she’s spent her entire life sheltered.Considering how sheltered she grew up, I’m surprised at how defiant she is.Somehow, someway, I found my mate while everyone here chose theirs.

In some instances, you can see her own version of captivity has taken a toll on her.The only difference is she grew up believing her father was keeping her safe from monsters, notthat he was the monster from whom everyone was running.

While Tara grew up fearing men, to Emery, they are almost an anomaly.Where Tara grew up ruled by order, Emery was taught that one day she would hold the very power to make the orders. While Tara grew up fearing intention, Emery grew fearing the dark.So different, but in some instances, similar.

If only Emery knew that everyone here was a product of her father, maybe then she wouldn’t hold him high on such a pedestal.Perhaps I should tell her.To Emery, I am the man who kidnapped her and killed her parents, so why would she trust a word I said, especially given she grew up being told mates are a myth.I suppose, in a sense, they are.

Our pack is different though. We don’t believe in the traditional mate bond rules.Instead, we find mates within each other; the women here attach themselves to whomever they feel safest with, that defies any bond.Bonds are myths for the most part but aren’t unheard of.I’ve personally never met an actual mated couple.I know she feels something between us.But will she recognize the bond for what it is without her wolf?So many questions are eating away at my mind.

“Alpha?”Tara asks, snapping me from my head.I shake my head to find we are at the top of the stairs, my hand gripping the banister like it could strangle life from the wood.I let it go, noticing my hand grip indented the soft wood.

Tara gasps, and I smell her fear. She is scared she’s angered me.

“What was the question?”I ask her, forgetting what she asked as I was too busy comparing my mate to the pack women here.

“I asked about her wolf,” Tara stumbles over the words as if they are physical weapons that could harm me.

I nod once, descending the stairs.“She never shifted,” I answer bluntly.

I side glance at Tara to see her reaction. Her brows furrow, and she appears thoughtful.“Maybe she got her birthday wrong?”she offers.

“It’s possible, you’d never know given who her father is, but at the same time she almost went into heat, I worry she has no wolf,” I admit.Tara stops in her tracks a few steps behind me.

“But if she has no wolf… how can she provide an heir?”

“She can’t, nor can I mate her.”

“What about marking her?”

“That I will have to ask Doc about.I’m a Hybrid, so I’m unsure how forcing my venom into her system will affect her, given she is essentially human with enhanced senses.”She nods slowly, seeing my dilemma, it means I may not be able to fully make her mine.

Once downstairs, I stride through the pack house, finding my pack members warily watching and waiting to see what I will command of them.Heading outside, I am about to go to my car when I find Kyrio by the forest edge with a crowd of rogues surrounding him.“I thought you said they were at the borders?”I ask Tara.“Kyrio couldn’t refuse them, Alpha.”She tries to defend his risky actions.

“We’ve just had a rogue attack, we can’t just be letting rogues in without checking,” I growl, stomping my way over to him.

“Calm down, Dion, Kyrio wouldn’t act irrationally,” Deacon my wolf warns me, and I am overcome by anger at his foolishness. However, my steps slow as I near, realizing why he allowed them through.
