Marianne turns her attention to me, her eyes blazing with bloodlust. She lunges at me, her movements fluid and deadly. We engage, our bodies twisting and turning in a desperate attempt to gain the upper hand.
With one final burst of strength, I deliver a calculated blow that knocks Marianne to the ground. The room falls silent as I catch my breath, my body trembling with exhaustion.
But my victory is short-lived.Elder Eric has disappeared.Panic grips me.
Emery.
I race through the mansion, following the bond that ties me to her.
I burst into the room, my heart thundering in my chest, to find a scene straight from a nightmare.Emery and Elder Eric are locked in a vicious fight, her wolf form snarling and snapping against his own monstrous figure. But as I step in, time seems to freeze.I see Elder Eric’s teeth sink into Emery’s flesh, and aguttural roar escapes my lips when he snaps her neck.
“Emery!”I scream, rushing forward as her body crumples to the ground. My mind races, terror gripping me like a vice. She can’t be dead. She can’t be.
Elder Eric turns to face me, a twisted smile on his face.“Ah, Dion.Too late, as always.”
Rage, pure and unadulterated, floods my veins.I lunge at him, my wolf surfacing, craving for vengeance. Our bodies collide with a force that shakes the room, but I barely notice. All I can think about is Emery, lying motionless on the floor.
We fight savagely, teeth and claws clashing in a dance of death.Elder Eric is strong, but my fury gives me an edge.He taunts me, trying to break my focus, but my anger is a shield against his words.
“You really think she was anything more than a pawn?”Elder Eric spits out, dodging my attack.“She was just a means to an end.”
I don’t listen to his lies.My attacks become more frenzied, more desperate, while Caleb screams for his sister.
He lunges toward me, his sharp fangs bared in a snarl. With a growl, I push back, giving Deacon some control determined to end this.
My wolf snarls and lunges at Elder Eric’s throat, only to be struck down by a swift kick.He laughs and I urge Deacon to stay down, to let him get closer.
Elder Eric stalks toward us, where Deacon feigns pain as he tries to get up.Elder Eric goes to grab the back of his neck when I scream at Deacon to attack. He does, with a ferocious growl, we lunge, aiming to rip his head off with one swift movement. His eyes widen in shock as he realizes the sheer power of my wolf’s jaws.My claws sink deep into his translucent flesh, my jaws wrapping tightly around his neck, and I hear the sickening crunch of his spine as it severs.
His body goes limp, and for a moment, there’s silence.
Panting, I turn back to Emery. My heart breaks at the sight of her, so still and pale.I kneel beside her, my hands shaking as Icheck for any sign of life.
“Emery, please,” I whisper, my voice cracking.
“Don’t leave me,” Caleb begs her, gripping her shoulders, yet my blood I gave her before we got here should have healed her, why isn’t she healing?
I hear Caleb’s sobbing, but it’s like a distant echo.My entire world narrows down to the woman lying in front of me.
Her chest rises ever so slightly, and a ragged breath escapes her lips.My heart leaps in my chest, and relief washes over me.
But the relief is short-lived.Emery’s eyes snap open, revealing an unnatural red hue.She snarls a sound that chills me to the bone and lunges at me, teeth bared.
Instinctively, I catch her, holding her tightly against me.She bites into my neck, and I wince at the sharp pain. But I don’t let go.I can’t.
“That’s it, love. You’re okay,” I murmur, stroking her hair as she feeds on me.“You’re going to be okay.”
Caleb watches us, his eyes wide with fear.I need to calm him down, but right now, my focus is on Emery.
Slowly, her frenzied movements subside, and her eyes return to their normal color. She collapses against me, exhausted and weak.
I hold her close, my mind racing. We need to get out of here and get her somewhere safe.I glance at Caleb.
“We’ll take care of you, both of you,” I promise them just as Kyrio rushes into the room, eyes scanning frantically. His relief is palpable, and I know we’ll all be okay.
With Emery in my arms and Caleb by my side, Kyrio and I step out of the shattered remains of Elder Eric’s mansion to see men face down, council officials arresting them.Women being freed from the out-buildings and I all but collapse on the top step as people rush toward us.
