She nods, her hand finding mine.“I know we will.I just...I’m scared, Dion.”

I pull her into my embrace, feeling her body tremble against mine.“We’ll figure this out together,” I assure her, planting a kiss on her forehead.

“I have to check on Kyrio, then organize a Zoom meeting with a few pack Alphas, see if we can rally them to help us,” I tell her and she pulls away.

Emery’s eyes linger on me with the faintest hint of curiosity, but she knows.I am her protector and her leader; it is my responsibility to make sure she doesn’t have to worry about anything other than her brother.

“I’ll go check on Kyrio,” I say, rising from the window.“Remember, I’ll be back soon. And as soon as I’m done with the pack Alphas, I promise we’ll come up with a plan to bring Caleb home.”

Emery nods and then stares back out the window, watching the storm that rages outside. As I make my way toward the dungeons where Kyrio is being held, my thoughts turn to meeting with the Alphas.

The council’s grip on our communities is far-reaching and dismantling it will not be easy.

As I descend into the dark and damp dungeons, I can’t help but feel a sense of dread.

I take a deep breath and make my way to the cell where Kyrio is being held. The chains rattle as I approach, and my heart sinks at the sight of how he is.

“Dion,” he whispers, his voice barely a murmur.“What are you doing here?”I open the cell, and he sits up in his bed.

“Where is Tara?”

He shrugs.“No idea, we had an argument.”he sighs.

“Over what?”

“Me being allowed to leave.I don’t trust myself around her, her scent...”he groans, and I know what he means.Emery’s scent is intoxicating more so than anyone else’s because she is my mate.“How do you handle it,” he states, leaning his head against the wall.

I crouch beside him, unlocking the ankle chains, trying to keep my voice steady.“Trust your wolf, he won’t let you hurt her, and if you wanted to, you could have already,” I tell him holding the chain up to show him, I snap it easily and he blinks at me,these chains are almost as thick as my hands.

“Trust your wolf,” I remind him, and he sighs, nodding.

“I’m here to get you out of here, Kyrio. We’re gonna take down the council, and I can’t do that without you,” I tell him, and he swallows thickly when I hear the creak of the door and footsteps.Tara’s scent wafts to me, and he straightens slightly hearing her get nearer.Standing, I grip his neck.

“Your wolf won’t let you hurt her. When you feel out of control give him control,” I tell him, and he holds my gaze for a moment and swallows before nodding.I let him go when I hear Tara gasp.

“You’re coming up?”she asks, and I glance over my shoulder at her, to see the tears burning in her gaze, her lip trembles.

“Yes, I’m coming back up,” Kyrio tells her and a sob escapes her before she barrels into him.I nod to him, before leaving them, knowing he’ll come find me.

The meeting is tense, filled with suspicion and old rivalries. However, I lay out our situation, the corruption of the council, and Elder Eric’s involvement.Gradually, I see the realization dawn in their eyes. This isn’t just my fight; it’s a battle for them too. We’ve all lost people because of Bernice; had our people go missing just for the council to cover it up.

“We need to stand together,” I urge them.“Divided, we fall. They’ll pick our packs off.”

The Alphas exchange glances, weighing my words.

Finally, one by one, they agree.A pact is formed, an alliance of packs, ready to face whatever comes our way. We’re stronger together, and that strength gives us a fighting chance.

As I leave my office, I feel a little lighter. There’s so much at stake, so many lives in the balance. We’ll face the council and rescue Caleb, or so I hope.We don’t even know what state he’ll be in, and I hate to think of how Emery will cope if we are already too late.

Chapter 46

The following day we get up early to leave for the council. It seems news travels fast.Within an hour of me finishing the Zoom meeting, I had phone calls coming in from the council. At first threats to stand down, saying I was causing an uprising, yet the threat of the human governments’ involvement is enough to make them back off; well, until Elder Sloan contacted me directly.

Standing before the imposing structure of the council’s headquarters, I feel worry claw at my insides.Emery refused to stay home, where she would be safe.Yet the moment the council heard of the packs rallying together, Elder Sloan called and asked us to have a meeting. He knows, with the packs behind us, the council holds no power.

“I’d prefer it if you waited outside,” I tell her as we climb the stairs.

Emery’s beside me, her hand gripping mine tightly.
