“Why are you protecting them,” he growls.

I can’t even answer him, my tongue feeling thick, and I just want to sleep.

“You traitorous bitch.”Madeline snarls, but Tara shoves her off, and the resounding slap that comes from Tara’s hand connecting with her face makes me cringe.

The next second, Tara blurts.“Emery hasn’t eaten in days.”

Dion’s grip on me tightens and I feel the tension lining every muscle of his chest and arms that touch me.

“I tried to take her food, but each time it was tampered with, or they stopped me.”

“Whose they?”Dion demands, and my stomach sinks at her next words.

“All of them. They believe you should reject her and kill her,” Tara answers.

“Right, well.Kyrio, come take Emery back to my room while I deal with this lot.”I’m suddenly passed off, and I can’t even keep my head up.

“Alpha, Tara,” Kyrio growls.

“She hid it, she’ll be punished, too,” Dion snaps and I whimper at the thought of him punishing Tara.Kyrio moves to say something but doesn’t get a chance before Dion speaks again.

“However, she admits fault, and confessed, so I’ll leave that punishment for you to decide, cancel our plans. We’ll leave in the morning since now, I have to take care of this.”

“Thank you, Alpha.Tara, now,” Kyrio demands.Tara rushes over when Dion speaks again.

“Tara?”he asks.“When did she last eat?”

“The night you fed her when she came down and ate with us,” she admits and the growl that leaves Dion and Kyrio makes me shudder.

“A week?”he asks.

“Yes, Alpha,” Tara admits.

“And you didn’t think to fucking say something!”he growls at her, but Kyrio answers.

“She’ll be punished, Alpha.I’ll see to it,” Kyrio answers.Dion says nothing but must allow it because Kyrio starts walking.Tara races to catch up to him.

“Kyrio?”

“Shut up, before I say something I can’t take back.I asked you what was going on.This could have been prevented! Now I have to punish you!”he growls, clearly not happy about that.

“Then don’t, let Dion,” she says and he stops.

“Someone will die for this, Tara. And I rather it not be you.Now get inside before he changes his mind,” Kyrio snarls.Tara rushes inside and Kyrio follows her.

I pass out the moment the air-conditioning touches me.

Chapter 30

The heat today was repulsive, the humidity horrid asstorm clouds start rolling across the sky, darkening everything in its path, as if they mirror the anger boiling within me.I stand before my pack, my eyes blazing with a fury that even the impending storm can’t quench. They’re assembled in the field, their gazes flickering between each other, as if searching for an escape from the wrath they know is coming. The air hangs heavy with tension.

“You call yourselves members of this pack, my pack, yet you’ve forgotten the most fundamental law of our kind–respect for your Alpha and Luna.”My words slice through the air, sharp and cold.

“Do you think starving Emery reflects respect?Do you think it reflects loyalty to me?”I ask them, my anger barely contained.“Your actions aren’t just a betrayal to her; they’re a direct insult to me, your Alpha!”

A murmur ripples through the pack, heads bowing in shame or defiance.I don’t care which, but either way they’ll pay for what they’ve done.

“Starving her, bullying her, acting like petty children. You weaken us at a time when unity is our greatest strength. We face real threats from outside, yet here you are, fighting amongst yourselves, creating conflict within the pack!”
